The money isn't the issue with me... I've purchased a DriveKey and have in a desk drawer. I experienced more problems when using the mod chip on the nefarious LU65 Wii than I really needed to deal with.

I've had to update my two Wii once in the last year. Thanks to DogEggs great tutorial it took less than thirty minutes each time. Using softmod allows me to use USB Loader and a drive on each of the two Wii.

My hope in buying the mod chip was to make it easier for my seven-year-old daughter and her friends to use the backups in her Wii without having to use a special Backup Loader channel. Now, that is no longer necessary... My daughter's Wii loads backups directly from the Disk Channel as well as loading anything from the USB Loader channel. I'm sorry that the DriveKey couldn't compete with the softmod but it simply couldn't on the LU65 Wii.

Of course, that doesn't take into account all the problems others were having with different chipsets in their DriveKeys.

I was getting tired burning backup games.
Sometimes the DVD blank discs that I bought dont work!

The Wasabi Zero is still working though, nice and one of the best mod-chip.

So, I soft-moded my Wii (4.1E, found the instruction here). It was dead easy (it wasnt 2 years ago when I bought my Wii).

Now, I am using USB loader

Even better, I can play Wiiware and VC .... and use CHEAT!!! *lol*

I have a drivekey x4 and it plays most games and when it wont I turn it off and use the gamma r8 rc1 with rev 17 and I can play super mario bros wii now and the games that the chip would not. And since drivekey came out with the new chip and wont release a firmware download which is bullshit. Just so peeps will buy their new chip that will play the new wii games really sucks. If they came out with the new chip they have the firmware already. But I like having both hard and soft mod beneficial if ya want to play all games.

    I haven't yet bought a chip but I'm 95% sure I'm going to now.

I soft modded my Wii and regret it. The guide I used didn't mention anything about creating a nand. So after my cousin updated my Wii, not knowing any better, It bricked. I went all over the web looking for a solution to fix it. I spent a month trying various suggestions. It was not until I got on this site that I found something that enabled me to use my Wii, even though it's still bricked.
There is so much misinformation out about soft modding and it's detectable by Nintendo.

So, if I can somehow figure it out I plan on virginising my Wii software.

There are guides on making your wii a virgin again and there are ways of ensuring you don't brick your wii by following the guides. I've blocked mine from receiving any updates and go straight to the loader therefore not allowing any interaction with the system menu. I have two young boys who probably would update it if they had access (not intentially) so if they don't have access they can't brick it. Also not having discs floating around, not working or disappearing as it's all on a usb drive ensures I'm not having to re write media constantly. Being detectable is not really relevant as you'll see most of the modders suggest not going over 4.1 and even at 4.2 you can block online updating with preloader/priiloader.

I've got a modchip in mine but I prefer the softmod much easier and cheaper in the long run if you set it up right.

What's the issue with your wii ? if you can't find a solution try and put as much information into the bricked forum and hopefully someone can help you with a solution.

My original intention was to get a modchip - I spent a good amount of time reading about them. Then I discovered the possibility of softmodding and I tried it as a 'stop-gap.'
Now I can play virtually any game I want from a usb drive, watch videos*, listen to music and not have to mess about with discs. If a game doesn't work I can look here for a solution.
Given that I'm intelligent / patient enough to follow the guides on here accurately, what would I get from a modchip now? I'm totally converted to using a usbloader, and don't want to use discs if I can help it - all my original discs are gathering dust after loading them to the HDD.
Could I do anything new? That's a genuine question - I may be missing out on something but if so I don't know what it is!

*altho' the (softmodded) xbox is a lot better for that.

I did seek some help and recieved it, many thx to oddgriffin for the aid. Unfortunatly right now I am unable to follow the advice given as I've been experiencing a bug on this site that wont allow me to load some pages while logged in. I've posted this in the login / registration issues section. So for now I must simply bide my time and hope for a quick resolve to my bug problem.

Thx for the advice though. much appreciated.

Is there really anyone that has a modchip that doesn't do both?

I have seriously lost track of why my backups are even working. Whether its the modchip doing the work or a softmod. All I know is 99% of my games work!
