I am cable free in my house. We just have 20 mbps internet and stream netflix or just hook our laptops up to our tv's. We use wireless but we have a linksys e3000 router that works fantastic even if its in the basement. Our monthly bill is 50 bucks total. I couldn't be happier. Also we have four xbox's in the house so we use those to stream movies instead of the wii I enjoy my 1080.

I am totally new to streaming, hulu and others. How do they handle the commercials with the paid subscriptions like Hulu + and netflix?

I am a total DVR addict just because of the ability to skip commercials.

How about viewing guides and such. Can you make favorites? Is it anything at all like the interface of a DirecTV reciever?

    Thanks

I cant speak for Hulu since I have never had it, but as far as Netfix is concerned there are no commercials. One feature I like is that you can set up a playlist from your pc and it will show up on your Wii. It also makes recommendations based upon your previously viewed shows/movies and categories are arranged by genre. Not sure if it is still going on but Netfix has had a free one month trial. Its worth checking out. I have heard they added a ton of new stuff, but I haven't been on in the last week, so I can't vouch for it.

I tried to get Amazon playing on my Wii last night and did not have much luck. How are you doing it?

On Wii, Amazon streaming can be used through PlayOn media server.

Hulu+ has commercials, but they are nothing like regular TV. depending on the show length you'll get 2 to 4 commercials segments that are less then 1 minute in length. Netflix has no commercials.

If you are in any country apart from the US, get a proxy. On our Media Center PC we have South Park Studios setup, BBC iPlayer, Adult Swim Gold, ESPN, HBO Go, Hulu and Netflux. We only pay for Hulu and Netflix as friends who pay for cable got us access to HBO Go, Adult Swim and ESPN.
