    Question DVD Ripping Software Recommendations

    Hello All,

I just got a digital media player for Christmas and I am hoping to start the process of ripping all my DVDs onto an external hard drive. I am wondering if anyone could recommend any good DVD ripping software. I currently have 123 Copy DVD, but it does not convert DVDs to *.mkv format. It will do *.avi, but I am looking for *.mkv because I want to include soft subtitles. I have found some free converters on CNET, but so far ripping or converting to *.mkv files takes 3-4 times as long and the programs are not very user friendly.

Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

I tried using DVD Ripper, the program was very easy to use and had a great interface, but it still took an incredibly long time to convert. I attempted to directly convert three 45 minute episodes directly from a dvd to .mkv and the entire process took about 9 hours. Does this sounds correct? I then tried converting just one 45 minute episode from DVD to .avi and it took about 1hr 15 minutes. This still seemed long.

    Thanks

I found a great converter. It's called Handbrake. It works great for converting. It does not remove DVD protection, but I find it very intuitive for creating MKV files and MP4 files. I use DVD copy to copy my DVDs and Handbrake for conversion.

I tried DVD Fab and it's a great program, but if you want soft-subtitles it only extracts them to a separate idx/sub file, it does not put them in the mkv file. When I check the forum for DVD Fab they said it was not an option in this version but would potentially be included in the future. Handbrake does include the subtitle files directly in the mkv. It's open source and so free!!!!

I will have to try smart ripper and IMGburn to test those out. Also to note I am trying to rip my DVDs to mkv files because mkv supports soft subtitles while AVI only can have hard subtitles.

Thanks for everyone so far with the input!
