Some Apps Detect USB, Others Don't

    Submitting this for your review:

    System Check

After following mauifrog's guide to completion, I added a USB jump drive (an old Lexar 8GB that was lying around) and everything was working great. Until the other day when I tried to change the USB drive. The entire file structure was copied from the old 8GB stick to a new Lexar 64GB one.

Now, some apps can mount/read/write to the drive, while others can't. Notably, the "GX" emulators (FCE Ultra, Genesis Plus, SNES9x, SMS Plus, VBA) all work fine. But other apps (especially WiiXplorer and the default loaders) seem to hang when loading, and don't even show the USB after a device remount. Oddly, the new drive did seem to work with WiiFlow the first time I tried it. Not sure what I was doing (first time using a loader), I opened WiiFlow, pointed it to a .wbfs file on the new USB and that seemed to play. But now, launching any installed titles just hangs on a black screen after you select "Start Game".

FWIW, I followed the FAT32 guide when partitioning/formatting the new drive. Used Linux commands (mkdosfs -v -c -I -s 64 -S 512 -F 32 /dev/sdb1), so details like 32kb clusters should be ok. (Also, the old USB stick still works fine and can still be detected and used by WiiXplorer; the new stick works fine in my computer -- so to eliminate the obvious hardware fail possibility.)

As you'll probably be able to tell, I haven't changed anything fundamental since applying the mods from the guide. I added the BootMii config editor to skip the BootMii screen. Manually downloaded the newest version of WiiXplorer (and replaced the old files). Stumbled around with WiiFlow causing it to go into a several-minute process to extract the NAND.

Anyway, the USB fix might/should require its own newbie thread. But in trying to troubleshoot WiiXplorer (and upgrading it), I saw that it allowed configuration for the other USB port, but requires d2x cIOS v9+. Having no real idea yet what that meant, I thought it prudent to get a handle on what's actually "installed," and that's what led me to here. So I totally appreciate any insight anyone has -- not just on the USB thing, but anything else I might be missing.

    Geecee:

Simply doing an entire file copy device to device may not be the ideal solution, probably a pathing issue. Your softmod is in order and 100%.

    Edit:

Zain, I had to manually approve your post (due to low post count and external link). Yes, those have Azo dye and are the ones to get.

Well this is certainly frustrating. Had a friend help me, picked up a 10 Pack of Verbatim DVD-Rs. They were a little different then the ones I posted, packaging said "Digital Movie", but they were still AZO Dye, still DvD-R, and all that I could find online indicated they were just Regular Verbatim DVD-R AZO Dye discs, but with a fancy covering.

Now, I burnt these. One for GC, one for Wii. Both still give the exact same error as before, only difference is that now they don't do the "3 clicks" before error, it just jumps straight to the error instantly on Neogamma.

I'm... lost as to the problem at this point. Either the Wii itself is malfunctioning, or the Burner is having issues. Cannot quite figure it out. You've been wonderfully professional in helping me so far (and yeah, I knew my post would need approval since it disappeared post-edit heh). Any other suggestions would be nice, as things stand, I'm at this point throwing good money after bad unless I just save up for a HDD. I do not know how easy it will be to get a cheap one, even a simple 50-100 GB will suffice, but I didn't see anything in my price range on the compatibility lists, so I'm unsure.

If you mean those discs that have that old movie reel look, those are Azo dye (or at least, they were last I knew). If the pack said that, then they certainly are. Reviewing your previous statements leads me to believe it's a burner issue (the fact you can't seem to burn at specific speeds would be an indication). The firmware you have (SS22) is out of date --- look here to see a newer version.

Continued dialog on the matter will likely result in me physically removing your posts from this thread and into its own thread (that's not a threat or a demand, I'm simply telling you we like to keep threads tidy). I would PM you the link in such a case (where I end up moving the posts).

    Going back to stock

Got a modded Wii and since I don't know/understand exactly what's been done with it, I want to go back to stock, update and do it all myself.

I appreciate any help that can be given.

Yeah, thats a bit old. First, read the newbies guide in my sig. Then re-do your softmod with the softmod any wii guide. Restoring to factory is unnecessary and can create more problems than it solves; our guide works on Wiis in virtually any condition.

Don't multi-post. It confuses you more than it does us since now you have 3 or 4 places to look for your response. Since this is the correct place to post a syscheck, I'll answer here and delete your other posts.

You have a mix-and-match of various cIOS sets. Some old, some newer than we recommend unless they are fixing specific problems.

I would suggest going through Chapter 2 of our Softmod Any Wii guide (linked in my signature) and install the contents of ModPack.zip, shop channel v21 if you plan on using it, optional but recommended to downgrade to menu 4.1, and if you do be sure to reinstall and configure priiloader.

If that doesn't work, check out Chapter 3 which has our AppPack of recommended apps to start with. The version of WiiFlow is one of the most current versions available (was most current at the time the app pack was created), so in case your WiiFlow is old, this will get you more current. If you want to latest version of WiiFlow, I have it linked in my signature).
