It gives me a diagram showing that I have to connect the hdd to the wii in order to do anything, but it's already connected.

I'm hoping someone can take a look at the data from my system check and give me some advice on how to fix this.

The hdd is a Seagate GoFlex Desk Adapter.

Since I didn't mod this myself I'm wondering if I'll be best off by getting a new sd card and setting up the re-modding the wii on that. Any advice would be much appreciated!

You could use an update on the mod.
Follow the Soft Mod Any Wii Guide.(Link is at the bottom of my Signature.)
Start from Soft Mod With Homebrew Channel Installed.
If you don't have an sd card , get one...at-least 1 or 2 gb SanDisk Sd Card is preferred.
Please read the Guide a few times , then proceed.

Also make sure your HDD is compatible.Link->Usb Compatibility List.

Yes, I'm connected to port 0 and the hdd is powered. I can feel that it is on and see the power light indicating it's on. Strange thing is that I can access snes games on the hdd via the Snes9x Gx app. I'm pretty certain that all those (hundreds of) games are on the hdd, as the seller had indicated.

    I've got WiiFlow v2.2rc1.

Please do as I suggested Above.
Your mod needs to be updated as you are running an old HBC and your cios's are outdated and you are missing several patches to your ios's.
This guide will also update your loaders as well.

Also your Cios 222/223 are stubbed as well.

Lets update your homebrew channel by doing the following...

2.Extract it and put it in your apps folder on the Sd Card.
3.Go to The Homebrew Channel and Run the Hackmii Installer.
4.Install the Homebrew Channel....This will over write the old one.

You don't need to follow that guide.
You don't need to re-install Ios58 or 61, but you do need to re-install your homebrew channel...so it updates to v1.1.0.

Lets update your homebrew channel by doing the following...
    1. Download this file, Hackmii Installer.
2.Extract it and put it in your apps folder on the Sd Card.
3.Go to The Homebrew Channel and Run the Hackmii Installer.
4.Install the Homebrew Channel....This will over write the old one.
5.Exit the Hackmii installer after your done and your all set.

After updating your HBC, go here to update your Cios's to D2x v8.Link->D2x Cios Installation Guide.

Stay away from Pimp my wii unless you want to Brick your wii.
Follow our guide, The Soft Mod Any Wii Guide.(Link is at the bottom of my Signature.)
Start from Soft Mod With Homebrew Channel Installed.
Follow it all the way through.
Please read the guide a few times before proceeding.

That's for the Gamecube, by the way.
