Usb port for powering

Hello guys,

Well... About two weeks ago I bought a HD Verbatim 320gb and it is driving me crazy.
I installed 38921738 cIOS, changed the USB Loader program, used NTFS format, WBFS format, used 2 programs to transfers the ISO's and it kept freezing in all games at random times.
So about some minutes ago I discovered that my "inside HD" is in fact a Hitachi Travelstar 5K320. Then I went to USB Devices Compatibility and saw this:

What is a "2 USB port for powering"? And it will make it work perfect?

Because I'm kind thinking of doing this tutorial, which is my last shot.

I'm a noob here but here's a guess.

Some drives require more power than what a single USB port puts out. Some do this buy pulling power from a power cord, some do it with a cable that has two USB ports instead of one, one is for data, the other is for additional power.

It suggests that the drive you are using is power hungry and needs to use 2 USB leads, one for data and one for power trasnmission.

It's also pretty unimportant (apart from possible power issues) what drive you have in your enclosure, it is the USB enclosure's interface that either works or doesn't with the loaders.

Freezing issues are often due to spindown issues. Unlike a PC the Wii does not send the USB HDD signals to maintain it's rotation and spin up when needed, so to cure this we have to either buy a drive with no spindown feature, live with it or change the setting using whichever software our drive manufacturer provide to access this setting.

Maybe someone can help me with this also. I currently have a usb hd but it powers up with a power cord. Now this is becoming aggravating as when I turn on my usb loaders I sometimes have to turn off the hard drive and turn it back on for usb loader gx to recognize it. I've looked around and I can't seem to find any, but what i"m hoping for is a link to a usb hard drive (enclosure if possible) that powers up by usb and not via power cable. Any help is much appreciated

Pretty much any 2.5" USB HDD will be USB Powered. The WD (FTW) My passport essential like I use is USB powered. Some say it overloads the Wii power circuits but I think that's a load of twaddle.

ah ok that's where I"m going about this the wrong way. At the moment I"ve only used IDE hard drives and bought my usb enclosures seperate. I've got 10 hard drives and they are all IDE so going out to buy a new USBHD wasn't something I looked into. At the moment I"m more interested in a 3.5 enclosure for the hard drives I already own, keeping it mind I"m looking for one that is usb powered.
On another note. I have the same problem with my ps2 enclosure hard drive. Every now and then I have to turn off and back on the hard drive to get my systems to recognize it. I own 3 usb enclosures and all do the same thing, which I'm hoping to fix with any luck.

perhaps you can check the manfacturers website to see if theres ne software for the drive ..as some drives have a sleep mode where they hibernate when the disc is sat idle....maxtor basics i know need this ....also when wii is laid down its the bottom port....just asking

Well, this HD have a small blue light that indicate that it is working and when the games freeze this light just turn off.
So, could it be a power issue?

Because I can't afford another HD, so I'm thinking in buy this 2 USB or a SanDisk 8gb

Hi I had the same problem . The Hitachi Drives require 700 mah of power , the drive needs two USB ports . The Wii USB ports only Supply 500 MAH each . So either get a drive with a smaller power consumption or get a dual USB cable
