external HD turns off when loading with USB Loader GX

So, im quite new to the softmodding but i was well informed and prepared before i started it. First of all, im on FW 4.2e, everythings installed correctly and is up to date, homebrew, cIOS, USB Loader GX with forwarder, etc. Everything works fine, including the new games like New super mario bros, when im using USB sticks. So i figured why not go bigger and plug in an External HD so i can have all the games on one disk. I went to the store, bought a Samsung S2 series 250gig (it was on sale), came home with it and realised it was the biggest mistake ever. I couldnt even format the drive with WBFS Manager 3.0. So i turned on google, found out that it is a crap disk to use with Wii, if not even impossible. Plan B, i swapped the disk with one of my friends. So now i got this 1 year old 250GB external HD (freecom mobile drive classic 2.5" 250GB USB 2.0). Got home, plugged the baby in, popped up WBFS Manager 3.0 and formatted the drive. Ezest thing ever, took almost no time at all, no errors what so ever. So i got my hopes up and loaded up all games. This took a while, which is to b expected, but finished with no errors.
Now i hooked it up to my wii, turned it on (Light on HD turns on), used the forward channel of the USB loader GX and the startup gifs turns up and stays. Now i notice the light on the HD turned off as soon as the startup screen shows up. Somehow my HD turns off when i try accessing it i guess. Google hasnt been any help so far, i tried anything other forums suggested. Turn off wii plug in and then turn on, turn on wii then plug it in, same result. Used another loader, cant find the disk as well same thing, led goes out when it boots. Format drive to fat and try to format it with the wii isnt possible either, as led goes out and i cannot find HD even when it is in fat or NTFS. Kinda tried it all and getting desperate. Is this a non compatible drive as well or can this be fixed? It's kinda doin my head in here!

The samsung hd isn't compatible but the other u have used is supposed to be. To get it to work this guide i have read says instead of using wbfs manager u should format the drive to FAT32 and then plug it into your wii start usb loader and let the wii format it to wbfs and then that should work. I haven't tried this and here is the link were i read it USB Devices Compatibility List - WikiTemp. Hope it helps. P.S i would check out cfg usb loader v50 - i have over 100 games and only 1 has not worked - Tom clancy's double agent which apparantly can only be played via disc anyway.

nope, doesnt work. Even tried with a usb stick freshly formatted and got the screen 'Format disk' then replaced with the HD and pressed format. Light remained on on the disk but blanc white screen with ur fingerpointer and basic music in a loop. Tried both USB ports as well. It just switches off as soon as USB loader GX boots. Weird stuff!

Have u tried loading the usb loader up and then when it searches for the hard drive then plugging it in. gotta be worth a try. Also have u tried a different usb loader?

well with USB loader GX (with nothing plugged into USB ports) i get an error cIOS cannot be loaded or something followed by a black screen with some white number gibberish on it. Got this other loader which boots fine with nothing in it, so booted it up, plugged it in, selected USB mass storage device and led went out again, retry retry, nothing. Then i tried different order, selected the USB mass storage device first, ofcourse this gave an error since theres no disk, then plugged it in and when it autoretried it switched off again. Horrid, just horrid...

If i dont get this to work i might just go back to the store with the samsung HD and go for a big USB stick. They seem to work just fine! HD is just so practic...

Here is a link for cfg loader ( Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire ) just change the .dol file to boot.dol. If this doesn't work it maybe just unlucky that the 2 hd's u have got r both incompatible.

downloaded the file, put it in a folder in the apps folder on the SD card. Renamed it to boot.dol and booted it through homebrew. Program boots just fine, lets me select drive (led still on at this point) and when i hit A to select it, the drive turns off and it keeps on tryin same thing....

I'm gonna be on an unluck streak aren't i!?

So i went back to the shop got my money back (42) and bought a WD 250GB My passport essential (85). About twice the prive but half the trouble. Plugged it into the wi, formatted it ez, no problems detecting what so ever. Games are now transferring.

One piece of advice for any1 with same or likewise problems: Buy WD, u pay alot more but u have no troubles what so ever. Works like a charm.

    need help!

sorry guys for reviving such an old thread, but I didn't want to create another one with the same topic, so here's my issue!

I have a softmodded wii with 4.3, homebrew/usbloader gx/wad manager/wiimc/internet channel by opera, all cIOS needed except IOS249, it threw an install error but I was able to install IOS250, now I have the mbfs manager and know how to partition properly and I have been playing game isos with a lexar 8gb flash drive with no issues, but I had a few more games I wanted to play so I took my verbatim 150gb ex hdd that it says is compatible in the compatibility chart and created a new partiton/unformatted/primary/active and formatted it with mbfs manager, put games in it, went into the usb loader gx and in the settings set multiple partitions, and I see my games and everything but just like the OP that started this thread when I select a game to load the screen turns black and the hdd turns off, I had to pull the power cable to restart it. It does it with all of my games in the hard drive, but I reset the system and put my lexar flash drive in and the games load and play perfectly, not sure what else to do but redo the process of creating the wbfs partiton, but I don't see why the hdd would turn off, if someone knows what I'm missing or knows a solution please help, I read somewhere that in power management I could set the hdd to run constantly but don't know how to access such setting, I'm gonna be buying a new ex hdd soon so I can use this one just for games but would like to fix this issue first.

    Nevermind!!!

I used Pimp my Wii and ran a test and found that IOS41 needed the trucha and reinstalled IOS249, and now everything is working like is supposed to.
