I just use file manager in XP. There are dedicated disc handling programs, easeus partition manager. If you format you will lose all data, some progs like Easeus I think can keep it, but best to backitup, one micro second after you have hit the button you might say 'oh no'.
    Been there, done that.

OK> so right now I have a 500GB external WD My Book. I have two partitions of almost equal size. I am moving stuff from the first to the second partition to consolidate them. So the first partition will not have any thing on it. I would like to use it for WBFS. My question was, the data that is on the second partition, will it be effected. I don't have any other storage to back it up.

    Thanks.

If you don't format the second partition it won't be effected. The one you are going to format with WBFS will lose all its data.
