USB Loader GX and WBFS partition sizes

I'm having a strange problem and would like some help.
Running 3.2U, USB Loader GX with 500GB Maxtor drive.

I have followed all the appropriate guides, etc and read many many posts.

I have about 40 games on the drive but only about 1/2 of them work and the other 1/2 just go to a black screen. After fiddling around with IOS's and CIOS's, etc. with still no luck I thought I'd try a few of these games on a 1G USB stick. And wouldn't you know, they work on the USB stick. So thinking it must be a drive compatibility issue, one more test - I deleted the partition on the 500G drive and created a 5G partition, formatted WBFS and copied over a few problem games (Family Feud 2010,Hot Wheels, Build'n'drive) and they work.

So... any idea why these games work on a 1G USB Flash drive, a 5G partition on the 500G drive, and not on a 500G partition?

Update:
I've tried 3 different hard drives - Maxtor 40G, Maxtor 300G, and the original 500G - still same result. I've tried 3 different USB to IDE cables - all no-name brands - still same result. I've also updated USB Loader GX to the latest version. Also BTW using CIOS38_Rev14.
Could it be a problem with Maxtor hard drives? Or maybe a problem with USB to IDE cables?

Download a partition manager like EASEUS and find out if the 500gb partition is primary or logical. It should be primary. Ive also got a hdd external case that doesnt show the model nr or brand type but it works fine with my wii.

Western Digital are the most compatable drives for the wii, my recommendation is any 2 1/2" WD Scorpion Sata.

I can run all games on WD.

xingxang: It sound like you may not have correct IOS installed for game, otherwise it is drive not compatable.

Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it.
My partitions are set as active.
I am assuming I have the correct IOS's if the game works from usb stick and from the 5G partition - let me know if I'm wrong here.
I would think there must be something wrong with my usb to ide connectors or drives, but I just cant get past that it works on the same drive with a smaller partition.
Any other suggestions?
