Question Playing Backups + Region Free?

I've searched and read for hours this morning and here's all I've accomplished.

I've got version 4U of the wii menu system, running a console purchased around the original release. So far I've used this info: Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess - Wii - Lifehacker to put the homebrew channel on my wii. No problems so far.

The problem is the next step. I want to be able to play backups of games burned to DVD-R. So my understanding is that I need to install a cIOS... but which one? I tried to install cIOS38_rev14, but got an error every time. Now assuming I'm able to install that, I then need DVDx correct? Once I have that installed I need backuploader .3 correct? The question then becomes... how do I play both NTSC or PAL backups?

Thanks for the help. I think the more I read... the more confused I got.

    Ca

I, too, followed the Lifehacker post. I have HomeBrew Channel successfully installed.

I then tried to follow another Lifehacker-linked post, and it seemed a bit outdated:
Run Backups on any Wii Without a Modchip

I found an updated one, but it focuses on using a USB drive and not DVDs, which is the medium I want to use. I did all the steps in it though.
Run Backups on any Wii Without a Modchip (Updated)

I then found this tutorial, but am worried because it apparently hasn't worked for some folks, and the creator says there is a problem with the Backup Launcher that he included in his zip file. So I have not followed his steps yet:

I do not want to use BootMii. I want to modify as little as possible so that I can very easily go back to a virgin Wii state - removing channels and taking out the SD card basically.

I am terribly confused about cIOS's and so forth. I don't understand what they all are, and why there are so many, and which ones I need to do what.

I'm running a very new Wii (purchased in May).

I burned a game ISO to a DVD and tried to run it with Backup Launcher 0.3, but I got an error.

Any help would be appreciated, and let me know if I need to provide any more details.

I had trouble installing cios 38 rev 14 and all I did to fix it was use anytitledeleter and remove all system files only 200 and up then try to install it and it worked. Then use WIU 1.1 to change the region of the iso of the game. You can also remove updates from the game to avoid bricking. Then burn the discs via dvd -r x4 speed. good luck
I want to hack you like an animal. You bring me closer to mod.

The tutorial you found sucks... You better follow the ones here.
And I don't think bootmii has to be installed, you can just skip that part, which is useless anyway, B/c your model is new, so it does not provide protection.. Also if your wii is LU64, if you don't know what you are doing you may brick it, so don't do any rush moves.

Okay, I've read up on cIOS's and I am in the know. Haha.

What is terrible about the tutorials I found? Not defending them, just want to know what parts I should avoid/ignore.

    okcomputer,
I don't think we need spend time dissecting the deficiencies of other tutorials. Messie has provided you the link to an excellent guide that adresses some of the variations and risks posed by ostmodding some Wiis such as yours (LU65). Additionally, this site is very active with members willing to spend time constructively assisting you in your softmod.

Should you wish to follow other guides (sucky or not), please choose from a group or site that can provide you assistance if needed. Best of luck to you.

when i installed it all i installed the neo launcher r7 and just use that to play ntsc games, how ever the wii i have is not a lu 64 or 65
but i would suggest updating the neo launcher first and trying it that way

hope i got it right sorry if i havent

also if the games are patch with a cios on disc you can get it launch using them (on disc)or the ones on usb /sd or wii (if u have them on the wii already)
