For the preloader hacks you don't necessarily need preloader. What firmware are you using?

If you cannot install bootmii as a boot2 then it has no point in being there except for backing up your NANDs. It will not brick-proof your wii though. Also, when installed as an IOS bootmii can only be controlled with a GC controller, there is currently no other way (It is really cheap though, it's 15e~=$20 in Greece, so even cheaper where you are...). Visit BootMii.org to be sure!

Your best chance protecting your wii from bricks is installing Preloader...

I have both and boot mii loads first then preloader29 . I installed preloader first then boot mii as boot2 . From preloader you can go straight to your homebrew channel .

I'm using 4.1U, I'm looking to be able to play backups via usb or dvd-r and some guides tell you to install preloader.

You dont really need preloader. It is always good to have but there are a few bugs in it that i do not like. Go to wiibrew.org and look up preloader and search the comments of it and see if it is what your looking for. As for playing backups preloader is not essential to the process at all

I know preloader is used to stop discs from asking to update if I am already at 4.1 then I probably don't need that. Any other benefit of using preloader? That was the main reason I was considering preloader anyways

It also allows you to recover if your wii if your wii is banner-bricked from a bad wad.

Yes bootmii as boot2 can fix that but it would be faster just to uninstall the bad wad or install a new system menu (if your system menu got corrupted)

ok thanks, i might install preloader as well, is there anything I should be worried about with both bootmii and preloader installed simultaneously. i heard something about preloader keeps the disc spinning or something, does that happen a lot?
