GX Loader will allow you to backup your original games to run from Hard Disc.

afaik WBFS is a necessary format for the range of USB Loaders to currently operate. You will need to format a partition of your external drive as WBFS to get the ability to play games off it. You can also have a logical FAT32/NTFS partition on the same drive for other uses.

Whether WBFS will be required in the future remains to be seen.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

i know what he is referring to, i believe its called Configurable USB loader (or something like that)...i think they just implemented FAT support, but i'm not positive. Just use WBFS, its the standard and easiest to work with

I formatted my Hard drive and worked with WBFS, It was significantly easy to do. If you don't mind me asking is there a reason you don't want to format your external HD?

I do know that it's possible to have multiple partitions on the had drive one for WBFS and one for (other items)

Probably was the cfg loader, it had fat support but that was only for covers and codes, small stuff, you would still have to have that WBFS to run the backups.
