Want to play gamecube games but disk drive is broken

Since hearing the news that a Windwaker remake will be released on the wii u, I have been itching to play it again. Here is my situation. I have the old white wii ver 4.3u. (I havn't done anything to it yet) About a year ago it the drive stopped working, so I bought the newer black one. Was very upset when i realized that it wasn't backward compatible!

I have read that gamecube games can be loaded from a usb.

So my questions is, am I able to rip the game disk to the usb without using the wii?

For ripping from PC,it's kind of a PITA, and you'd need a specific LG drive (I dont remember details, but it's not fun). Does your wii have GC ports? Whats the story with the white one, does it still work, besides the drive?

Yes it has the ports and other than the drive it works great. We use it mostly for netflix and a couple of games we downloaded from nintendo. I take it that I couldn't use the new just to rip the games and play them on the old one. Right?

Can a non-GameCube-compatible Wii still read a GameCube disk enough to get a CleanRip out of it? If so, you can use your new Wii to get a rip, then install to USB via DMToolbox and use Dios Mios on the older system so you can play it.

I'm not sure if that will work, but something to try.

You may also have to use a older DIOS MIOS 2.0 update 5 and USB Loader like CFG Loader r35, GX r1193, Wiiflow because all the latest DM 2.1+and latest USB Loader verify the disc drive for the NODISC patching to work, with DM 2.0 you could put NODISC to ON and it will not verify the disc drive so it will work with the older Wii with the broken disc drive.
If the disc drive is a little functional then you could use the latest DM and latest USB Loaders because you do not need a disc in the drive for DM to work it just have to be connected to the wii.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the old drive and the new one?
I'm thinking about taking the new drive out of the black wii and switching it with the white one. I'm better at working with hardware than software. Just waiting for a special screwdriver that i had to order.

On the other hand. If I was to Softmod my black wii, would the homebrew channel control the reading of the disk or would it still be controlled by the wii software?

With Devolution you may be able to play GC games with the new wii from SD and USB with wiimote + classic controller :)
With DM only on the older Wii with GC controllers, I use DM because I have two older white Wii.

Not just yet, while Classic con is now supported in the basic loader it is only partial support. Meaning you can only control the loader with the wiimote/classi-con...sadly the wiimote still shuts off once you load a game.

A bit off topic, but I was in a similar situation: bought a second wii when my drive stopped reading games.

Anyway after spending some time soft modding the Wii I learned it's really cheap and easy to fix. $25-$30 and I got a replacement drive and spent about 15 minutes swapping it out. Now I have two wii's and hooked up a buddy with my spare.

Oh yeah I also just remembered: My old wii, even when the drive crapped out on me, it could still read gamecube games (just not wii ones, they always gave a read error). Maybe you should double check if your old wii will too.

Another nother thing: If your old wii is simply not accepting games it may just have something jammed in it...if you take it apart and remove whats jamming it it will likely work again.

Also try DIOS MIOS v2.2 update 2 and older versions of USB Loaders like CFG Loader r48, GX r1198, and DM Booter, with the old white Wii.
