Helping New Members with their Introductions
We have a lot of first time posters come in to ask questions which have been answered time and again -- they post without searching, they dig up old threads, or they post in the wrong section. This isn't anything new and it comes with the territory, but I think it's possible to bring the frequency of these types of posts down, at least a little.
What I'm suggesting today is limiting the posting access of brand new members until they've created a thread in the Introduce Yourself forum. They can still view the entire site and all its threads, but until they post an introduction they could only create a new thread or reply to an existing one in:
- Introduce Yourself
- Newbie Discussions
- Visiting Staff From Other Sites
- Login/Registration Problems
- any other forum deemed necessary
Assuming this is possible, I think imposing this would alleviate a LOT of the clutter we see around the forum on a daily basis. Most importantly it would lead all new members directly to the best source of info for familiarizing themselves with the site from our greeters.
Plus if they really don't feel like they're going to hang around and refuse to make an introduction, they can still make a thread and ask their questions in the newbie forum.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions/addendums/corrections welcomed.
