Harddrive compability for softmod HDD. More than list/variabels?
Hi. So iv taken a look at the compability list below here:
What Im used to is that drives may have subtle name changes in different countries, and that a few numbers/letters behind might not make a big difference. That atleast was the issue when modding xbox360hdds.
Iv gotten 2 drives here, and hoping someone has any ide if they should work. Also just to be 100%, the wii can use hdd with no external power right?
The drives iv got is both Western digital:
If you have the drives already, try them. Non-powered drives will work with the wii. My *PERSONAL* preference is to use only powered drives so as not to put any additional strain on the wii's power supply.
Great advice. Is there any spesific test to check this, I havent found a good solution you see.

Test it By hooking it up. That's the only way you will know if your wii will need an Hdd with it's own power supply.

Best to get them with power supply.
I see. But how do I know it this HDD wil work with the wii. Any specific test, or how to see it?

My advice and my opinoin, personal experience, I always use a drive with the highest RPM speed and USB 2.0 ie: any make drive at least 5400 pref 7200 rpm. I then use easeus partition manager and format it to FAT32 remove all manufacturers software. You do not want it to enter sleep mode. Set it Primary & Active. Only ever had one failure, it was CORE by CNM quite cheap. Good for saveing files but Wii didn't like it.
Then load your apps, usb_loader and make a file called wbfs. use wii game manager to swap games around. or Rip your originals straight to Drive with CFG v65.
Thats all folks. later:::
additional note i use 120,160,250,500gb portable wii powered units, I also use 500,1tb 2tb powered units. without SD card, I put everything required on root of hdd.

In your experience, how long does it take to load a game by USB instead of by disc?
Thanks for great help all of you!

If your drive is formatted to fat32, you're in the clear. Just make sure its set to primary and active. NTFS can even work, tho in a more limited way.
seconds to load, I am sure i read somewhere. Wii reads backup discs slower than originals, You can hear the drive unit grinding away to load, HDD seems to read info quicker than original discs, Never really worried about the initial load time as once into the game, Hard drive has never faltered.I have limited experience with NTFS, Ended up having to run with an SD card inserted to get WiiMc media player to work. I stick to Fat 32 It gives me best options. Most people I mod for are after, simple disc free operation for their kids, Most kids don't ralise the expense of the original disc games. I set them up with a tweaked version of Maui's setup.
