I have tried a search and came up with nothing in the forums searching "usb" so i though id post a thread myself. If this has been covered already my appologies if not could we make this a sticky for ease of all trying to hack usb on their wii.
ok here it goes.
I have noticed that there are certain homebrew apps that have an option to playback media files off of USB as well as an sd card. So this basicly tells me that the wii USB can access a thumbdrive (or possibly a usb hard drive)*crosses fingers* through homebrew. It would be nice if one of the nice people making some of our homebrew apps could look at implementing USB support in the homebrew channel or even through a menu hack of some sort
Thanks for listening, and all the tuts i needed to hack the hell outta my wii
You can use:
Wii Homebrew Launcher - WiiBrew
It is not as clean as the homebrew channel, but it can read homebrew off of USB. I'm not sure how well that works, I just use both an SD card and a USB thumb drive to store WADs/ROMs/etc. Most of the emulators support ROMs on the USB.
It would be nice to be fully supported/featured, But is it really necessary at this point? I mean I have a 2gb sd card with a bit of homebrew on it, and its hardly used any space at all??? The only advantage I could think of would be an 8gb thumbdrive that an app could dump an image to of a game.
what i was meaning was if we could dump our mp3 libraries onto an 80GB USB hard drive AND our home brew we wouldnt have to jack around swapping sd cards.
What i have done is take my western digital harddrive that i have inside a generic enclosure, formatted it to FAT32 using a free program called "SwissKnife" download URL
CompuApps, Inc. - Download Swissknife
dragged about 3 mp3's onto the drive hooked it up to my wii.
To my sheer amazement when i launched Mplayer on homebrew i selected USB drive and my 3 files were sitting right there to be played back.
so i selected 1 of the files and it played back.
all i have to say is BOOYA!!!!!!! I i smell a fully featured MP3 player in the near future

Thats is great news which should mean it should also play video!!!! I will try it when I get home....this is what I usually do on my PS3 instead of burning disc for movies......thanks for the insight!!!!
Which version of Mplayer are you using?? I understand there is one out there by GeeXBox.....can you provide a link or something on the mplayer you are using?
Thanks in Advance

If only Geexbox could be converted to a .wad and installed as a channel then I'd be a really happy camper
