booktyping dvd+r to dvd-rom does it enable 6x reading?
If I booktype a dvd+r to dvd-rom does it get past the dvd+r reading issue and does it enable faster reading of discs i.e. 6x?
Most information here seems to be use dvd-r. I have two wii's and both seem to read dvd+r booktyped to dvd-rom without issues and games seem to load well and run well.
What is a really problematic game that runs badly from dvd-r?

I don't understand the question. One has nothing to do with the other --- AT ALL. Booktyping simply tells whatever is reading the disc to treat it as DVD-ROM. A burner is capable of distinguishing a burned DVD+R as as DVD+R, regardless of booksetting. You can use either DVD-R (preferred) or DVD+R. The thinking goes due to reflectivity, the -R has a higher value and making a read less "wear and tear" on the mechanism itself.

On the last: anything with cut scenes. The thing is, a softmodded Wii reads backups @ 3X --- there's no getting around this limitation, it has to do with the exploit (debug) used to softmod the Wii. Almost all hardmods have this limitation as well (a couple do not, if memory serves --- but the majority do).
Thats interesting about dvd-r's being more reflective. I hadn't heard that before, I don't suppose you have any links to information regarding this. Previously I'd read it was purely down to the dyes used and many dvd-r and dvd+r discs shared the same dyes. I believe there is a low grade princo dvd-r at one point with a reflectivity as low as 30% and there is a dvd+r disc of 85% with the mitsubishi dyes MCC so there must be some cross over depending on the manufacturer rather than purely dvd-r is better than dvd+r with regards reflectivity.
With regard the 3x wii reading not knowing the full details I thought it might slow down to help prevent read errors with copied media and was hoping its dvd type reading was fairly basic and would be fooled by a dvd+r bitset to dvd-rom and somehow run it faster. Oh well it was just a thought.
You are completely right in that the dyes used do have a direct impact. The AZO dyes in Verbatims are excellent; also Taiyo Yuden media is excellent. Maybe what should be said is reflectivity in theory is identical, but in practice it is not --- dyes and quality of media directly correlate to this.
I just did this and its worth a freaking shot. I took a dvd+r disc, and set to 1x write. My burner (pioneer 113r or something) writes anything below 2x speed as dvd-r book. It works in my wii and everything. I'd try it. I also used memorex dvds. Also if you have one of a few burner providers liek LG, IMGBurn can change booktype to -r.
Wouldn't it be better to set it to dvd-rom rather than dvd-r? That way if the wii drive does take notice of the booktype it will see the disc as a commercial disc or does the wii dvd drive adjust the laser to compensate?
See I thought setting the disc to dvd-rom would mean the drive would see it as a commercial disc and run at upto 6x reading rather than 3x reading as I thought the dvd drive set the reading speed. However it sounds like the softmod takes control of the dvd drive and reduces loading to 3x speed maximum whatever the disc type.
dvd-r = dvd-rom as far as I thought. If you want a problematic game, try dbz tenkaichi 3. I know the onlien lags horribly on disc and the media lags, like the opening. Its fine if you use usb, but on a burned copy it lags and such.
