A Wii Challenge for you all: Unknown Brick - Where do I start?
Just acquired a brick whose history I know nothing about.
It powers up, will accept and spin discs, no video and then totally inactive, i.e. have to 'hard boot' to reset it.
I have no idea what fw its on - serial is LEH etc etc etc.
Suspect that it has been modded but to what extent I have no idea, and so I'm expecting the worst.
Where do I start ?

wow....joined in NOV 09 and this is your first post?!
I am far from an unbricking expert but would start with checking for bootmii/boot2 and priiloader.
Does the drive LED flash once or twice when powered up? What's the full serial # and region? Look here to see why I ask.
Thats not bootmii as boot 2 capable, you will need to check the wifi and bluetooth modules

Is your thinking that the wifi or bt could be causing the problem, rather than it being a brick, and you are just trying to rule them out?
My tri-wing is not arriving until tomorow so unable to do as suggested just yet.

Should have mentioned that I do have a fully working Wii available, and I am willing to spend on modchips, etc if required, and (naively maybe!!!) also willing to have a go at flashing the NAND chip.
Is there such a thing in 2011 an absolutey fully bricked 'past the point of no return' wii???
Yes, a non boot2 Wii (like yours) that is bricked and not caused by hardware.
You can't flash the NAND without having a backup for a bootmii as iOS Wii, which yours is and you do not have.
That's for coming back Bad_ad.
So I guess what I've got is a number of spares encased in white plastic !!!lol
Can you explain for me why the wifi or bluetooth failure would cause the black screen, and are failures in these components a common occurence?
Wii, much like the DS requires all the parts to be working, if they are no the system will not boot.
Bluetooth module being faulty (or just needing reseating) is quite common, wifi also goes but not as often.
