Thread: Can I check how old my Wii is?

Can I check how old my Wii is?

I'd like to know so I know whether it can load discs and other things that vary with age. I bought it used so I have no idea when it was made. Is there a model/serial number or something I can look at to see how old it is? TIA.

oneway to check (partialy) would be to goto the official nintendo rist strap and wiimote jakets offer and type in the S/N of the wii if it succeds then its probsly pretty old. BTW order 4 even if you don't have 4 wiimotes.

There's a database where you can put in you sn and it will tell you if your wii has a newer drive in it that can not load backed up dvd discs. Not sure how much else it gives but it will give you an idea if it's around 1.5 years old or so. Can find it by googling wii serial number database or something like that. i don't have a link handy.

Thanks for the link, that's really helpful. Is the copyright the year I should be looking at to see how old it is? Which year did the newer non-backup-loading drives come out?

    I'm right here
    what drive do you have?
    d3-2 and d4 can't read burnt games

note: if you have bootmii as boot2, your wii can read burnt games
See the Thanks button over there?

Best way is to open it up and look at the drive chip. If going by time of purchase then d3-2 came out sometime around sept'ish 09. Anytime around or after that is a crapshoot - some had it some didn't depending on how long inventory sat in the store you bought from. If going by serial, the link Krafter gave you is the best option.

Copyright year on Wiis is almost always the same regardless of manufacture date (which shouldn't be a surprise as copyrights do not necessarily dictate DoM). Some report a 2009 year but I have yet to see one. All Wiis I've seen say 2006 newer or older.

my wii serial number when entered it says There is a 100% chance the chipset is GC2-DMS. but it don't read back up disks just USB. i ordered wii jackets from nintendo. boot mii cant install to boot 2. so is this an older wii? i understand only wii's built in 2010 cant read disks.
p.s other information is...The Wii has a RVL-001(USA) model number and is produced for Canada/Mexico/USA. The copyright year is 2006.

If it can't install as BooMii/boot2, it's made since mid-2008. To verify it's not an improper softmod, you could do a SysCheck as described here and post the results as a reply to this thread.

It's actually September 2009 when they used new drive chips.

It sounds to me like you have a case from a different Wii. Where did you buy it?
