Advice Needed - Bought 2nd Hand not sure what has been done
I just bought a 10 month old wii 2nd hand with the intention of soft modding it to allow me to run backups of my games from a usb hd.
Please bear with me as I've never used a Wii before...
When I switch it on, the currently inserted game appears at the top left which I can play. There is also an option for the Homebrew Channel (which I thought I needed to add) and on the second line there is an option for "play backup disc" or something like that. I haven't yet worked out how to backup my games (will work that out later) so I downloaded an ISO version of one of the games which came with it and burnt it to a DVD - put it in and to start with it doesn't recognise it but then when I click on play backup disc it runs perfectly.
I presume that these bits aren't there as standard?
So how do I work out what has been done already? and how do I get it to play off USB? I've got a link for a 64 bit versions of WBFS manager for my laptop (win 7 64) which I will download and install but I'm unsure if I need to install a usb loader or if it's already there (don't really know where to look)
My other concern was I read that when softmodding (if that's what they've done) that you should make a backup of some critical system bit incase of any future problems, obviously I don't have that backup - does that matter?
So, what your saying is that on the wii, upon booting up and getting past the health & safety screen, there are 3 channels, the disk channel, the homebrew channel, and a channel to load backup games right? In order for the wii to read the backup disks through the disk channel you must install a softmod call DARKCORP(AKA cIOSCORP v4.0) but I would not recommend that to a beginner. Only install it if you know what you are doing. Now for USB loading its not so complicated. You need to download one of the many USB loaders, create an Apps folder on the root of an SD card, and put the files you just downloaded in that folder in this format x:\Apps\(Name Of App Here)\boot.dol, meta.xml, and icon.png. Now you need to plug your USB into the PC and see that you have a NTFS partition, if you do create a folder called wbfs. Download a .ciso game and place it in that folder. Plug the USB into the wii and load that app you downloaded earlier, through the homebrew channel. You will see your game, load it and your done! As for the backup, you need to install bootmii, For more information, follow one of the many guides on this wonderful site. Hope I shedded some light on the subject for you

Sorry I was probably a bit vague, there is more than three channels. When I boot up it does the health and safety screen, you press A to proceed.

So backup discs work etc already so I presume it is either softmodded or chipped, but I don't know which.
I'll try a USB loader on an SD card - does it matter if one is already installed/how would I know?
Thanks very much!
If I go to the homebrew channel I just get a bubble type background, there are two icons in the bottom right one looks like a globe and is just flashing. If I press home on the remote then it brings up a menu where I can exit. At the top right of this it says:
Not sure if that helps?
Tried that but can't get it to work. I can see it in the homebrew menu but when I run it, it just goes to a black screen - I left it for a good few minutes with no change, then switched off. There was no csv on the sd card.

They do say they require certain IOS versions and I have no idea what I have! I haven't formated any devices just left them as Fat or fat32 or NTFS. I tried formating a 2gb pen drive with the WBFS Manager but it just throws an error saying it can't format it.
Where do I go from here!?
I've just looked at the Wii Systems Settings 1 screen and it says "Ver. 3.3E" at the top right if that helps at all?
I'm really struggling with this!
SysChecker doesn't appear to work on my wii.
I downloaded BootMii (well HackMii) but that doesn't even show up in Homebrew
I downloaded the softmod update pack from here:
Step 1 is remove some clutter - When I go to this there is one channel with ??? is that the one I need to delete? Is this step essential?
Step 2. I can't see a cIOS38-rev17 Installer. I just get:
Firmware Update 4.1
The homebrew channel did ask to update itself now that I've enabled wireless - is that safe to do? and is it likely to fix this problem?
I managed to sort out the update, so now have a more up to date soft mod installed. Also have usb loader as a channel. Now when I load the usb loader it detects my external hard disk and offers to format etc - so that looks good (just need to partition and sort out first). I tried a blank 2gb pen drive but it just hangs with that in.
Never managed to get Boot Mii working though
