Is there any person being sued for torrent use?

Hi, I heard that torrent site monitoring is getting strict.
I'm also usually downloading movie as well as games through torrent.
Is there any person reported as being sued or jailed for illegal movie/game copy?
How much serious do I need to consider this issue?

Just pulled it up. Have to watch it with sound when the baby wakes up, lol. Looks neat.

What about warning letters? I've heard of a few people getting those. Never have myself.

So, you mean, the warning mail, they - government or something - send warning mail before action?

I heard of one case on the news where a woman was being sued for a ridiculous amount ( cant remeber the figure but was crazy) for using limewire and D/L copywrited material.

I've been told that ssl encryption on usenet is alot harder for the Isp's to trace and read but the verdicts still out on that.... what with the money they could throw at it anyway.

If I've helped please click the THANKS tab!

I'm in Canada and here (for now) the ISP provider can not legally give out your information to the police. So any warning letter we get, and I have received some are just warnings about high download use. Warning a possible suspension of service or termination. Its all huff though. I have had a friend get a letter after downloading one movie (his first) and yet my parents download 70 gigs a month and have nothing said to them. Some isp providers allow you 60 or more a month depending on your plan.

That case is in the doc I mentioned. They charge you 80,000 a song or offer a lump sum charge of just over 5000......

Funny part is after she got caught and went to court, she did it again and went back to court.

Limewire and those types of things are way out of date and I bet that's why lots of people get nabbed. Private tracker with PeerGuardian running is pretty safe. I agree with Landstander that most of the warning letters are huff, and I've also heard that in the US the ISP can't give out your info without your permission also.

ejk- No problems. You're new and learning. Great idea for a thread, though.

As you said, I'm newbie, please let me clarify.
So you guys are saying that... if I'm using ATnT DSL then they're not allowed to provide my information to police even they request?
Also I'm using uTorrent, is it safe? and do I need to keep update newest version of that?
Or just keep old one? Which one is safer?

ejk- download a program called PeerBlock. Research that, ensure youre using torrents (A private tracker if you can) and that's about as safe as you can get.
