    I've kept mine on its side the whole time I've owned it without any problems.

    I think the whole thing about standing a wii up is so that it gets aired out equally and no heat tends to build up in an area where air cannot flow through as well. I have also heard ppl say laying them down helped their disk drives work better.

    If you look at how the vents are place and how the fan blows you can see that i was made to be stood up. If you have issues with disk not loading right when it standing its just a matter of adjusting the loading arms.

    Yes you can tell it has better air flow when vertical but either way is fine. Whenever I play gamecube games I always take it off the stand and place it horizontal because I get disk read errors when it is vertical. This only happens with gamecube games not wii games. Original disks not backups.
