Hi, I know that this is a very generic question, but I was wondering what recommendations that experienced people may have in regard to what firmware/versions are the best to have on a WII. I currently run a WIIKEY 2 on ver 1.3 and my WII itself is on ver 3.2E. I also have the HBC, but do not know if there is a ver for this.
Any advice/recommendaions would be greatly appreciated.
Recommendations for what? Is there something else you wish to try to do that you may or may not be able to do now?
No, not necessarily. It is just that I have read around the web that the WII version should be updated to ensure that the latest backup games can be played. I am currently having trouble playing the NSMB backup, and thought that the problem may be that I am still on 3.2E. If I remember correctly however, I thought that I read somewhere a while ago that this was the best firmware version to ensure that the WIIKey2 worked correctly.
Don't know much about the modchip except that if you don't have a cios (softmod), the only way to get the ios file to play the game is to update from the disk. That particular game requires the ios files in system menu 4.1. If you were to softmod, you could install any ios files you want without having to update the system menu.
NMSB is a special case and can work on most Wiis, regardless of System Menu. If you're asking is 3.2 perfectly capable and supported by the specifics of say the 3.1-4.1 mod, yes. If you would update to 4.x you do gain the ability to have SDHC support, virtual channels to be ran off SD card, etc. I realize that's not the question being asked, but perhaps worthy of knowing anyway. With regard to NSMB, best check out this thread.

If you dont want to go to 4.2 because of homebrew you could maybe try Wanikoko's safe updater to go to 4.1 which is explained in the topic I pointed to you and see if it works.
If it doesn't, then maybe you could go full sofmod and follow trough the entire tutorial
