Softmod chipped Wii ?
Happy new year to you all
I have a friend who has a chipped Wii and wants to know if he should soft modded it as well? To cut a long story short, he has no idea what chip was installed, he's unable to play some of the latest games i.e. New Super Mario Bros, the software version he has is 3.2e.
What can he do to allow him to play these newer games?
That is agood question. he has one of 2 options at this point. he could softmod, but softmodding isn't for everyone. you have to be more careful in what you do and be able to follow the directions carefully for the softmod as well as any other ios files needed in the future. sometimes it is a trial and error situation and requires some patience.
he could run the disk update from the NSMB and be at system menu 4.1 and have all the ios files needed, but it is hard to tell what the future of wii games holds and he wouldn't have the control over system files that softmodding would allow.
Also depending upon the modchip, if he were to use the official online nintendo update. he would be taken to system menu 4.2 and not be able to play games out of his region.
what about updating using the HBC and going to 4.1? not sure why he was told that he could only go to 3.2 though, do certain chips have this limitation?
He could open up the wii to check what Chip he has, since the warranyt is already void anyway.
I am unfarmiliar with the chips, but doubt they are limited to 3.2
I would be more inclined to update to 4.1 with NSMB and then softmod with priiloader to prevent any future updates either online or through the disk. He could also then run the games from a HDD instead of the disk drive.
So he would run New Super Mario Bros which will update the system to 4.1, then do the softmod and finally install Priloader which would prevent any future updates?
I have the NSMB ISO which I have burnt on a DVD for him but this doesn't load on his Wii, does that mean he would need to buy the original? or is there another way of running it? It works fine on my Wii through the neogamma app, could I install that app on his Wii?
just another question, if he wants to install the USB loader software - he likes the way I have mine and the ability to load games from a hard drive, can he go ahead and install that now? or does he need the soft mod?
talking to my mate about upgrading the software on his Wii, he told me that he was told that upgrading from a original game like NSMB would somehow detect the chip installed and brick the machine, is this correct?
Well i never heard of this, sounds like "fear mongering". the bottom line is that without the ios files, the games cannot be played. If he softmods, he can install them manually, if he doesn't he has to use disk updates.
Ok, I'm going to bite the bullet and go ahead and do the softmod for him! I'm planning to use the "New 3.1-4.1 Softmod for ANY Wii" tut of this site and when upgrading the software I'll use Mario Smash Bros which will take it to v4 and then I'll use Firmware updater to v4.1.
Anything else I should look out for? anything I should not do from the tut?
