Guy is telling me that new Wii's won't read disc backups. This isn't true is it?

I'm having a friend of a friend mod my wii (b/c I can't figure it out) but he's telling me that new Wii's (my 4.2) can't read backup discs and that I would have to put the games onto an external HD first.

I'm completely new to this so can someone help me out here?

what are the first few letters of the wiis serial number? and some new wiis as of 2009 hav the new chip that does not read dvd-rs

"2009 Wii Serial numbers after LU3884XXXX and LEH2676XXXX have probably got the new D3-2 chip that prevents playing backup DVD's. They can still use original discs and USB loaders."

crap. so do you guys think i'm better off getting the HD or selling this wii, getting an older one and getting the mod done that way?

Well as Dami said, newer Wii's are un-moddable, but this applies only for hardmods (chips), softmods are still working quite fine as I've just modded a friend's Wii.

With softmodding, you still can run the games from the disc and/or from other medias.

PS: I have tried the NSMB on my friend's Wii from the disc, works perfectly.

well my wii is lu64 and still has the good chip, and i think 71 could have the good one too. if u want to test it just burn one backup game and put it in, see if it displays the game icon on disc channell

You can check this for a list of chipsets matched with serial numbers HERE! to find out if you have the particular D3-2 set.

    i'm completely technology retarded.
so if i send this guy my wii he can sofmod it and he said he can put emulators as channels. that's a possibility right?

i don't need an external HD or a USB b/c i really don't need 500 games. i just want to be sure that this guy will be able to softmod my wii and when i put burned games into it, they will play. that will work, right?

    thanks for the help guys.
