Wanting to softmod but very unsure
Hi Guys....Firstly....i'm a total novice at this softmodding lark, i got my wii out the loft last weekend after it collecting dust for 8 months (been to busy to play it) and decided i wanted toi start using backups on it from friends, Family etc all i can say in my defense is ive worked it IT for 9 years and anothing you advise me will be tsken on board, you wont be tearing your hair out answering this post! hehe!
Now ive taken a look at the tutorials, tried to educate myself on whats what but it seems such a complicated subject or am i getting it out of hand?! lol!
I mean all i want to be able to do it hack my wii so i can play backed up games mainly, playing DVD's and other gimmiky things dont really appeal just yet so you know ) ive taken a look at the 4.2 guide cos thats what my wii is and i see on there optional things to change that are potentially dangerous bit near the end that are optional yet i have no idea what there for, worried about future updates on the wii etc messing with the mod.......it just seems there is no standard hack to just get backed up games played....i'm not stating that thats just how i feel
i saw a tutorial on youtube, mailed the guy direct for some advice and he was being very cryptic, quite zany and vague with all his reponses which in the end kinda thought this guy wont take into consideration i'm a novice who needs some guidance
I told him all i was really interested in was playing backups on the wii and he's just told me his tutorial allows me too: -
Play games from HDD, Change themes, install custom channels, block updates, change the health screen to video, play DVDs, Cheat on ANY game (if you're a cheater), you can put an entire OS on your SD card and use it, move the disc channel, and pretty much whatever you want.
but being a total novice think those changes should maybe come in time, first things first kind of thing......its like anything you change something investigate another and before you know it your wii is all singing all dancing
so was just looking for some help in what i should do, ive ordered a 2GB SD card ready to softmod the machine, ive got backups on the way its now just a case what instructions to follow and what you would suggest doing to begin with
i'm thinking to follow the 4.2 guide of course but whether that is what i need to do, again i'm not totally sure, i dont want to get to elaborate with a process i know nothing about and end up trashing my wii with things i was not looking for.......i'm not a massive gamer i just want the ability to play more games when i get the wii out
so whoever reads and replies to this 'request for help' lol picture someone who has done as much research via tutorials, FAQ's and is still scratching there head a little, looking for simple lamens terms what i need to do to get backups playing on my wii yet still keeping the wii safe from updates, hazards future changes and whatever you feel i should do i will do to the very last detail as i just want to be 100% sure what i;m doing
if you could help me on that it would me a massive relief and i would owe you a drink sometime!
i look forward to hearing from you

I modded mine using the 4.2 and it is working fine. It may not be particularly clear in some isntances but it does what it says. I am now able to play backup games. I had one hitch around IOS, which if you chek my posts you can see how I got around. Bar that it's working a treat. I would say though that you should have good knowledge of your PC and formatting SD cards/USB. From what I can see any games that you need to play must be on a WBFS formatted card/USB. WBFS manager will do this for you. I would also say to READ THE TUTORIAL VERY CAREFULLY and carry out the instructions provided. One thing it did was somewhat vague on was when installing the IOS from Homebrew you may see an error at the end. If this happens you have to try a different IOS version. It is all there but read carefully. If you are not a geek I would enrol the services of a friend. Happy modding!

i think this is one of those instances where having a nack for working with files and not being afraid to try things would be helpful. as for thing along this line and doing things to computers and other technology i have no fear at all and can think clearly and dig myself out of a bad situation. when it comes to things like working on cars (mechanical) i get easily confused, scared and mad lol. i only say this because this sort of thing is not for everyone and when i followed the tutorial i had no idea what any of it meant but i simply followed the directions and when something specific came up i asked questions. but noone here can help you if you don't try

I've been reading tutorials to soft mode my wii for a week and i think i can do it hell i will give it a shot tomorrow..although i don't get the part with playing my back ups so all i need to do is have my backup, remove the updates, use WBFS manager to put the game into my usb flash the ios part is a bit blurry any help will be appreciated..my advise to you is keep searching and reading.do it when you feel ready and in control of everything
WBFS Manager actually scrubs the image for you as it load it onto the USB/SD device.

I will speak of personal experience. Modding your wii requires a few things. All of which you may already know working IT for a while. the ability to follow instructions is paramount and equally as important as having a working Nand backup in case something goes wrong. In the tutorials they say that making a backup of the nand is optional. I would upgrade that to REQUIRED. The tutorial in sour's sig is excellent and i would highly recommend it to any one who wishes to mod the Wii. I would also follow Keilla's advice about searching and reading everything you can.
Sour: Thank you for the tip about wbfs manager. I didn't know that it scrubbed the isos.
Thats what i'm here for
