WiiConnect okay to be on with 4.2u softmod?

    Hey, all! 1st post.

I followed the excellent 4.2 menu softmod update tutorial, and I'm good to go! Just have one question that I can't seem to find the answer to. . .

I turned off WiiConnect as suggested, but now I can't use the shopping, weather, news, etc. channels. Is it safe to turn WiiConnect on under 4.2u softmod, or will it automatically update/brick my system?

And, if it's not safe to leave WiiConnect on, is there a WAD or whatnot to install to allow connectivity to the Wii Channels but not the auto updates?

    TIA!

Anyone? Really would like to use Wii Vote and Weather, not to mention any freebies from the Shopping Channel!

    DO NOT SWITCH ON WIICONNECT

Install the new 4.2 shop channel with Wad Manager Shopping Channel-NUS-v18.rar
    Homebrew Channel 1.0.6 | Internet Channel | Sys Menu 4.1e | NeoGamma R8 b15 | Preloader .30 r3 | cIOS38 r14 | Wad Manager 1.5 | cIOSCORP 3.5 | DVDX v2 | Mplayer CE | WiiGator GC Backup Launcher Ver 2.0 | Wii64 Nintendo 64 Emulator | Homebrew Browser V 0.3.6 | IOSCheck V 0.3.6

Yea I totally agree. Wiiconnect is the main reason for over heating since the console is never actually powered off.
If I have helped you in any way, please thank me by pressing the little thanks button.

Im alright. Really all wiiconnect24 does is keep your wii connected to the internet even when you power it off. Since wiiconnect is on though you really never actually shut the system down, thus causing it to over heat. Anyways. You can still use all those channels without wiiconnect turned on. I have wiiconnect off and I still use those channels.

Huh. I can't access the news, weather or shopping channels without the WiiConnect turned on. I can download the cover art and such for games, so I know my connection is fine. In fact, it says something about WiiConnect not being turned on so I can't use the channel when I try, for example, weather. I wonder if this is a 4.2u thing? Anyhow, I'll try that modified shop channel. Thx.

EDIT: I also had the "standby connection" or whatever it's called under WiiConnect turned to "on" but that seems to be overridden by turning off the WiiConnect.

ooohhhhhh dummy me. Yea turn wii connect on but standby off. When you power your wii off, you should have a red light. if you have a yellow light, then something is still on preventing your system from actually turning off.

Okay, but when I'm using the Wii, the WiiConnect won't auto-update my system or whatnot, correct, even with 4.2u? Also, will it ASK to update it - I'd hate for my kids to accidentally update it when I'm not there.
