maybe you have bad sectors on the disc? format it and look for it with a disc rescue tool or sth like that

I bet messie means something like seagate tools or some other type of program.

Or you could use windows to check out the drive.

You will need to reformat the drive, but you can check for bad sectors in windows.

Let say the (after the re-format) the driver letter in question is H:

Click start then run, (if in xp) and type in cmd. Click ok.

Then at the run line type in: chkdsk h: /r

Take a look at the results.

What kind of HDD is it exactly that will not work? Did you check the compatibility list to see of it is compatible?

Pro disk. On the site it's under the 500gb category. It says it should work. I got it from futur shop

If one drive works fine and the other doesn't, then it must be either:
    1. Sleep issue with the external drive.
    2. Bad Drive.
    3. Unsupported drive.

You could try a different usb slot.
I've found the Roswell notebook SATA external enclosure works great for multiple drives that even several on here stated do not work. It's only like 15 bucks too.

If you take to long to progress thru the game or if you pause your game and leave your Wii for a specified amount of time the drive will go to sleep, and then when you goto play the game will lock up while the drive is coming out of sleep. Usually you can use the software that came with the HDD and turn off the sleep function. Of course this happens only with USB hard drives, and not hard drive enclosures.
