Thread: Need help choosing a hard drive (usb powered vs external power)

Need help choosing a hard drive (usb powered vs external power)

I've been asking around on different forums but can't seem to find a definitive answer. Has anyone out there tried both usb powered and external powered usb hard drives on their wii (of course not at the same time)? Can anyone give me impressions of performance between the two? My concern is since the usb powered hd will draw power from the wii, performance would somehow take a hit. Also I'm concerned about damage to wii due to the extra power consumption. I do like the idea of having an external hard drive without the need to plug an AC adapter into it. I also like the portability of the smaller usb powered drive (I bring my wii to and from work and friends houses alot). On the other hand, I can get a 1TB hd (external power) for the price of a 500gb hd (usb powered) plus I wouldn't want to risk any potential damage to the wii. Can anyone out there help me out? Thanks in advance!

By any chance you use the 2.5" drive for an extensive amount of time? If so did you happen to notice if the Wii ran a bit hotter than usual? Sorry for all the questions.

I haven't actually tried either drive yet (just a usb stick). I was just wondering if you noticed anything out of the ordinary when using the usb powered hard drive. Thanks!

I'm using WD Passport 500GB with SD/USB 1.5 loader, IOS36Rev10, works perfectly OK, loads more than 200 games!

There is a compatibility list of drives that work with the Wii, just google it. I bought a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent and wish i didn't. It was on the list as one that worked with the Wii, then a few days later it was changed to a drive that has issues working with the Wii. Maybe things will work out in newer versions of usbloader.

Currently using Western Digital My Book Essential 750 gigabyte with Usb Loader 1.4. No problems so far! Drive has USB 2.0 and Esata ports.

just letting everyone know, if you are having problems, make sure the wbfs partition (if you have more than 1) MUST be a PRIMARY partition.

pick up a western digital mybook. It's a powered drive but I've noticed if you turn off the wii by holding the power button (so the power light is red instead of orange) it shuts down the hard drive as well. Plus it works perfectly with the USB loader.

Yeah 1 TB drive is around $100, but I believe it can work with SD/USB ver 1.5 as per the info provided, can some one confirm 1 TB My book will work?
