Updating to 4.0 -> Should I Stay or Should I Go ?
Greetings everyone. After much searching and reading, and even more searching and researching, I have many questions. I will first explain my current configuration and then ask some questions which may help me make some decisions. I really like the fact that it's now possible to use SDHC cards. This is the main factor why I would like v4.0. My system memory is quite low all the time, and I hardly play any of my games as much as I would like to.
- 3.2U Firmware
- Starfall (not sure which version)
- Gamma Backup Laucher (channel)
- USBLoader 1.1 (Channel from Sorg) (installed using ModderMan's guide and IOS rev 9 of course)
- Homebrew Channel (v1.01, IOS36 v4.18)
- Wad Manager v 1.3 (Channel)
- Internet Channel
- Shopping Channel
- Weather Channel
- Snes Emulator (Channel)
- FCE Ultra (Channel)
- Sega GenPlus Mega Drive Emu v1.2a (Channel)
- Many Many IOS's, (not sure which ones to be exact)
- A few VC titles such as FunFun MiniGolf, Tetris Party, which were installed via a WAD, as well as Mario 1,2,3 which also were installed via WadManager.
I have about 260 free blocks on the Wii, I have lots of save files that I am in the process of transferring to a SD card. I have found that some of the save game files (Castlevania, and others) will not transfer to the SD card. Any idea why ?
My questions are as follows.
1. What is the exact (or outline the process) of SAFELY upgrading to 4.0
2. What preparations, if any, should I be doing prior to upgrading (including, but not limited to) removing channels, uninstalling IOS, etc. ?
3. What are the drawbacks, risks, and associated things to watch out for when performing the upgrade.
4. Any other tips, feedback to make this transition smootly
5. Should I just wait it out ?
Thanks for taking the time post your comments and feedback. I love the community here.

You need 300 blocks of memory to safely use wanins updater...go into your memory settiings thing and delete that wii and the internet channel, its a crappy video that takes up 1600 blocks. Then use this guide
Thanks for the feedback guys, still a bit confused. Do I need to remove starfall ? Do I need to remove any IOS ?
The Internet Channel I have installed is the Opera Internet browser as a channel, It's not the crappy 1600 block video thingy.

Also, the link provided by hundshammer has expired or been removed.
Also, any idea why some saved games will not transfer to an SD card ?
Also, will the already installed WiiWare titles I have installed but not purchased, work correctly or am I better off just to un-install them at this point and re-install them after the update ?

You don't need to remove Starfall or any IOS, though starfall will no longer work on 4. Never remove an IOS!!!
You will be fine with cIOS249 rev9. Some game saves are locked and can't be copied, there is a way round this, im not sure how but im sure a search will help.
The wiiware will still work as long as you use the patched IOS60...if you use the guide i posted you will be fine, just make sure you have at least 300 blocks free or you could brick.
So..... I installed IOS60patched.wad using wadmanager.....rebooted
Ran the Waninkokos Firmware-Updater_4, and while it was downloading IOS61 it returned a
"ERROR ! (ret = -1)"
error message. Any ideas ? I am sure the solution is around here somewhere, but I have searched without finding it. Thanks again
*EDIT* I have 460 free blocks on the wii system
*EDIT2* Seems like it was networking issues, wireless is acting flaky today

Everything has gone ok for now. Update is complete. Now the other things I would like to work out are as follows
a) installing startpatch 4.0 or another type of brick/update protection
b) this process never asked me about the shop channel, but it did download and update it, do I need to install the NTSC offline wad pacakges for the ShopChannel and which one goes first (IOS61-64-NUS-v4890.wad or RVL-Shopping-NUS-v16.wad)
Thanks again guys, almost there !!
** Update **
Everything has gone well. I did NOT have to do anything to the shop channel, it just worked
To gain the ability to use SDHC I did have to install a custom wad manager as a channel. I think it was Wad Manager SDHC Channel-WMSC.wad.
So again, thanks to everyone for the great help and even better site. Keep up the great work !
what brick/update protection did you use and how did u install it?
I used StartPatch4.0_USA. I did not install any of the reigon protectection that is in the startpatch installation, it gave me some erorrs, but I did install the update protection. I am not too worried about the region issue as I get my materials from trusted known working sources. And yes I am aware of the fact that improper region is the major causing of bricking.
