Problem with Backup Launcher (error 349)
I am completely new to Wii and just bought it 3 days back in Beijing, China. The box seems to be a Korean version. The store guy gave me some 10 different games and apart from that he gave me a wii sports DVD which is in Chinese or Korean. But he asked me to use the Force NTSC option whenever starting the Wii Sports DVD alone. When I brought the Wii home, I see that the homebrew channel and the backup launcher channel is already there.
I upgraded the Wii to the latest system software using the Wii Settings menu. Still everything works fine. I have the homebrew channel in which I am able to see videos and play mp3 files using the MplayerWii. The backup channel is still able to play all the games the store guy provided me with.
The fix is when I wanted to get an English version of Wii Sports. I downloaded it from mininova and burnt it onto a Sony DVD+R (my laptop can only record DVD+R). Here is when I get error 349. I tried a different torrent in mininova and still the same error. Then reading some posts that DVD-R is better for Wii, I tried burning the ISO file to a DVD-R with the help of my friend. At all times I am using imageburn software. This time I get the first screen where once I press A it turns blank and few seconds later, I get the message that the disc cannot be read and please refer operations manual.
I have some channel SoftchipR73. Not sure if it is related to the modding chip. I have backup launcher 0.3 gamma, IOS249 it looks like. I already wasted 3 DVD ROMs and am not in a mood to go any further now. Please let me know where I am going wrong or whether I need to install some other software to get this thing working.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Note: I tried searching for this error in this forum and several other forums but didnt understand exactly what needs to be done to solve this issue.
today, modded Wii's selling in China is mostly 3.3u converted fm 3.3K consoles.
burn your iso with DVD-R, recommended.
"press A it turns blank and few seconds later, I get the message that the disc cannot be read and please refer operations manual. " -- Imgburn, 2x~4x.
so do you mean I should downgrade back to 3.3 or something because now I seem to have the latest version which I believe is 3.4. one thing to note here is that I can play all the other games given to me when I bought the Wii including the Wii Sports chinese version. I am just unable to play the Wii Sports english version that I burnt myself.
Also should we not use DVD+R at all. Because as I said I might need to depend on my friend forever if I cannot use DVD+R because my laptops dvd drive only supports DVD+R.
no need to downgrade ur 3.4x
re-burn as suggested. may work. new player always suffer the first few burns. u're not alone
hmmm.... Wii likes to take DVD-R, practically.
what kind of laptop writer? replace it with a multi-DVDwriter, as DL D9 DVD+R may be required someday.
Thanks. I will try to re burn it with Imgburn at 2X speed on a DVD-R with my friend's laptop for now.
The DVD writer on my laptop is HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N. It came with my compaq presario X1028US laptop that I bought almost 5 years back. I wouldnt change the DVD writer just to burn Wii games. If at all I did, I would change the laptop itself. Meanwhile I am trying to find out if there is anyway to burn DVD-R discs using this writer itself.
Thanks a lot billyhome. It finally worked. I re burned the same file onto a DVD-R with my friends laptop using Imgburn at 2x and it worked like magic.
If you get to know how to get the DVD+R also working, please do let me know. Thanks a lot for your help.
Hi chsriman, glad to know it's playable now! My Jap Wii, "sometimes", takes DVD+R burnt at the same ImgBurn setting; but i wouldn't recommend this option for u. Rather, u stick to the brand of DVD-R. That's magic (in fact, the kind of dye used on DVD-Rs)!

Yeah I did some more googling yesterday and found that I can upgrade my GCA 4040N DVD firmware to GWA-4040N that can burn DVD-R also. After that update, I was able to burn a DVD-R in my laptop and was able to play it in the Wii also. Looks like I am set now to enjoy the wii completely.
