Way to go, Nintendo. This will NOT make your customers buy a Wii-U. This will simply further alienate them. You can't tell me there's THAT MUCH COST for your servers in terms of overhead. Oh well...
Just a friendly reminder, tomorrow you will no longer be able to access some of the online functions of the Wii. This is NOT because of your Softmod, it is happening to ALL Wii owners. For all the details check the link below.
Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Being Shut Down (official statement)
Enjoy your final hours of Wii Wifi gaming while you can.
This affects Nintendo DS and DS Lite as well.

They weren't Nintendo's servers, rather GameSpy's. I'm sure GameSpy offered to keep the servers running when the initial 10-year contract ended for an arm and a leg.
The current network that powers 3DS and Wii U games are Nintendo owned in-house servers.
Someone on the Miiverse said basically the same thing, I also thought it was Nintendo's servers.
If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct
It would not be hard to use (if you're Nintendo) alternate servers and a redirect at the DNS level. While I get what you're saying (that they're not Nintendo-controlled or proprietary to them), there's absolutely no reason why they'd have to be enslaved to an out of contract agreement or provider.
I did a bit of snooping around after I saw this topic, and it appears that there are people setting up custom servers for these games to play online post-WFC. This specific link shows how to register for Wiimm's custom Brawl server, although I'm pretty sure we're already passed the cutoff for it. Looks promising though. I wouldn't test it myself until sometime after just to see how it turns out, it requires you to erase or remove your save to generate a new friend code.
