    soft mod attempt failed

    Hi All,

I recently purchased a white Wii running 3.4u. I am trying to mod so I can use it with wiiflow loader to use my system with a USB drive.

I followed the tutorial for the 3.4u on the "completesoftmodguide" website.

I was able to install the homebrew channel and bootmii and back up the nand.

I copied the files from cIOS D2X Installer 3.1 to the "Apps" folder on my sd card. I also used NUS downloader to get the two recommended wads.

So far as I can see I have followed the instructions in the guide exactly, and I tried several times. However, at the end, when I select the blinking "slot 249" and try to get the operation to go through, I very quickly get the message "failed" and the slot turns red.

One thing I want to add is that I have wifi on my wii and have verified it works with the system. But I had the impression it was not working with this cIOS installer because the install failed when I tried to do it without the wads. That is why I downloaded the wads and tried to do it that way, but it sitll failed.

Is the tutorial I am following accurate and should it work, or is there another tutorial someone suggests I follow instead?

If the tutorial should be accurate, anyone have any ideas what might be causing the failure?

    Thanks for your help.

Why are you following another sites guide? We don't support outside guides, you should use our Softmod ANY Wii guide linked in my signature.

Thanks for your advice. The reason is that I discovered that tutorial before this forum. I just discovered this forum. I will check out the Softmod ANY Wii guide.

SnesMaster, thanks for directing me to the wiihacks guide. I followed it and everything went smoothly.

I have succeeded in using USB Loader GX to load back ups from a USB hard drive and everything seems to be working great. I am really impressed by how much faster loading times are on the HDD compared to the disc!

I have two questions I'm hoping you can help me out with.

The final step of the tutorial is copying the loader applications to an SD card so that they can be used. Does this mean you always need an SD card dedicated to the loaders to use with your Wii system? Or is there a way that I can run the loaders from the same USB drive where I am storing my games?

The other thing I am wondering about is if there is some way to "scan" the hard drive with the loader so that it can update the game list when you add games?

When I was originally testing out the loader, I started with three of my games, in wbfs format, in the wbfs folder. Since then I have added a few more wbfs files, but for some reason the loader still only sees the original three I began with.

    Thanks for your help.

I forget which ones do this, but some loaders require you to update the cache before you can see additional games. I've never had that problem with CFG, so maybe try that.

Also, we don't recommend using a WBFS formatted hard drive anymore. FAT32 is what we recommend most people use. There is a FAT32 guide that gives recommendations on how to format and install content to the hard drive that is linked in my signature.

As for running USB loaders off of USB, you can copy the /apps directory from the SD card onto a FAT32 hard drive's /apps directory and then tell HBC to load the apps from USB instead of SD. If you use the Wii Menu forwarders to launch the apps, then I'm not sure if they will know to look for USB if not found in SD or if they are required to be on SD to use the forwarders (I don't use forwarders, so I don't know the nuances of how they work).

    Download the latest:
    Latest Loaders CFG v70r65
    GX r1226
    WiiFlow 4.2.1
    Other downloads DM/DML 2.11

USB Loader GX is the only one I know for sure requires updating the cache.

If I spelled something wrong, I'll just blame it on auto-correct
