softmodded Wii "UNABLE TO READ THE DISC"
I softmodded my Wii about 6 weeks ago and everything worked perfectly. I installed GxLoader and backed up my 35 games and have been running all perfectly off my HD. This morning I tried to add a new game I got and GxLoader reported it could not read the disc format. I tried using the Wii disc loader and it also reported "unable to read the disc". I tried each of my 35 disc and none can be read. Now I realize that the drive could have chosen this moment to die but I am a little suspicious of coincidences. I went and checked all of my settings and noticed I missed "block online updates" in Priiloader. Could an online update caused this problem (I know better than accept but my 8 year old doesn't). I used "ModWii" because it seemed the least likely to make a mistake, is this a trust worthy way of modding or should I do it manually? Any recommended course of action, i.e. redo everything, restore my nand backup or just leave it alone since all my other games work perfectly off the HD and I'd hate to make matters worse. I have a new Wii U coming on Christmas for my son and this experience has spoked me about modding it in the future. Any words of wisdom or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

We recommend following Softmod Any Wii, which can be done on top of a currently modded system to get it current.
If you're not sure if your mod is sane, post a syscheck. If you think remodding it will fix it, then go ahead and try to remod.

I am currently working my way thru the procedures and after re-installing HBC and HackMii I have already recovered the Wii Disc loader verifying the issue is not the drive. I will update my post after I am finished but already I am way happier than I was an hour ago.
I finished working my way thru the guide and everything is working better than ever. I did make sure I enabled the 4 hacks recommended in the guide so I won't have an update spoil my setup. Everything went so smoothly and perfectly that I think I will mod my Wii U when I get it on Christmas. I had come across several links on other sites from people having the same issue (unable to read discs) and no one offered any help except suggesting replace the drive nor did anyone report getting there system to work again so I hope anyone having the same problem can take comfort that solution may be as simple as carefully following your softmod guide. Thanks to all for the hard work in putting it together.

If you mod your Wii U be careful, there are differences. Make sure you only follow the Wii U guide and not a Wii guide. Do not do anything extra unless you are sure it is safe for Wii U. Also know that it is riskier because there is no real brick protection available for Wii U, no way to block updates, and it is unknown if Nintendo will ever push an update that may break the mod....they have not so far but there is nothing stopping them from doing it in the future.

They also have the ability to invade your system and delete things if you violate the ToS which modding does
