    25th Anniversary Red Edition

So I have this Wii but I want to replace the CD drive to one that plays DVDs. Yes I know that you can soft mod the system to make it play digital media however I just want my mom to pop in an original DVD/copy and watch without having to navigate through the menu. I'm not sure if only the first generation white Wiis were the only ones that played DVDs. Can I just swap out the red CD drive with a nintendo cd drive that actually plays DVD's? If so, what cd drive model am I supposed to buy? Or are the CD drives also encoded via a chip?

You cannot do this. A red Wii will have a D4 board. It's not the optical drive itself, but the PCB attached to it that determines whether you can play disc backups or not. A D4 board was a redesign with a significantly smaller footprint --- it's not a drop-in replacement.

In this day and age, there's no reason not to go USB. It's faster, doesn't wear out the finite lifespan of a laser, and can hold massive quantities of Wii games and has a relatively small form factor (at least the external 2.5" drives do).

Buying or using a Wii as a substitute or replacement DVD player isn't practical. A standard DVD player can be had like for $25 new (your post isn't clear, but it sounds like you meant movies?)

Yes, you're right I just came from Target and found the prices for DVD players were $27. I was really hoping that a Nintendo CD drive was going to be less than that. Guess I'll have a lot of ripping DVDs to do. Appreciate the help. Can a mod please close this thread?
