Hi there. I'm new to the wiihacks community. Recently, after much frustration owning a black wii (after discovering its *ahem* limitations) I went out and bought a white wii with the gamecube controller/memory card ports. So, I'm pretty happy. EXCEPT for one small detail. I followed the complete softmod guide written by Mauifrog and everything seems to be working fine. I just got done watching a DVD on my wii using WiiMC and it played alright. However, I've discovered that some of my DVDs either wont play at all, or take a very long time to load. This doesn't seem to have anything to do with the condition of the discs though (all are retail, movies I bought at the store, not burned). For instance, I put in a brand new copy of The Princess Bride, loaded WiiMC, clicked the disc icon in the upper right, got the loading DVD message for a bit, and then the Wii froze... It refuses to play this movie. Austin Powers: Goldmember would not play at first past the first few minutes, so I changed a setting to make it skip the dvd menu and go straight to the main title. Now that movie plays ok, Princess Bride still won't. Mplayer does the same. Am I missing something here? Is there something else I need to install for full DVD playback support? My wii's serial number is: LU63334531, The database says:
There is a 75% chance the chipset is GC2-D2E.
And there is also a 25% chance the chipset is GC2-D4 on a smaller drive board.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give and I look forward to being a helpful active member of the community

Think I figured it out guys. Apparently, the copy of The Princess Bride I have is a special edition on a Dual-Layer DVD, which as I understand it is not compatible with the Wii. Am I right about this? The wii has no support for Dual-Layer DVDs? I tried a few other retail movies that are dual layer, and the same thing happens: WiiMC (and MPlayer CE) say "Loading DVD" for a few seconds, and the wii hangs. Sometimes is eventually kicks me back to the HBC, other times it just remains frozen and I have to manually turn the wii off by force (holding power button for a few seconds). So, I assume that is the problem. Single-Layer DVDs load and play just fine. Although, one Dual-Layer movie I have, Dance Flick, which contains both the Theatrical and Unrated versions of the movie plays ok. Kind of odd that it works when no other Dual-Layer DVDs I have work at all. I guess the Wii has partial support for Dual-Layer DVDs?

Wii can play Dual Layer discs, some of the games are Dual Layer, but it's a known issue that some Wii's, particularly the older ones, can have problems reading them.

And, Wiis are lousy DVD players even when it does work. IF all you want is a cheap DVD player, Wal-Mart has $20 units that will break down in a year.
