    Hi, new fish here.

    Hi Guys

A new member here and have just recently got my hands on a second hand Wii for my son thru a PSP+ PS2 swap deal. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable when it comes to P.C stuff but the Wii is a bit of a different one for me. But then again, I am really looking forward to educating myself in the ways of the Wii .

I have read and researched but hopefully, you can provide me with further information

--The Wii I purchased: I have not checked the serial number but it looks a bit old, the kid said that he got it as a b-day present when he turned 9, the kid looks like he is 14 now so I presume that the Wii I got is a bit old.

    --The version is 3.1u

--It is able to play back up DVD copies of Wii sports and Spiderman Friend or Foe, the other ones that I have tried failed like Farcry, House of Dead and Mario Kart

--Does not seem to have Homebrew installed

I am really happy when my wife, son, siblings and my mom enjoyed playing wii, even if we are only able to play Wii sports tennis as of now. It gave a different feeling as compared to when I got my ps2, psp, computer, family computer etc. wherein I am the only one who enjoyed playing them.

I am now planning to softmod our Wii using Mauifrog's guide after I obtain an SD card. Fingers crossed. My only question is, based from my description of the Wii, could the Wii have been hardmodded as it is able to play backup DVD even without HB installed?

    Regards and thanks in advance.

yes possibly has a modchip installed

    and welcome to

Thank you for becoming a member of the best wii modding site around!

First off you need to read the
Site rules and try your best to abide by them.
Also You need to realise that this site is here to help you make the most out of your Wii and not to help people with piracy!

Now we know the rules its time to learn some basics about your Wii, the best way to do this is to read

Bluphant's noobs guide - Basic introduction to wii hacking

Once you have familiarized yourself with the Wii, Wiihacks recommend you follow this guide

The Softmod Any Wii Guide by Mauifrog

This guide works for all wii's with an sd card slot

There are also other guides which you can find in the
    Guides and tutorials section

Once you have completed the guide you need to ascertain if your wii is capable of playing backups via the disc drive or whether you need to be usb loading.

Wii's post 2009 generally cannot play backups via the disc drive and have to use usb loading.

I recommend usb loading anyway as you can add an remove your games easily and there is no wear and tear on your disc drive and no messing about with discs etc.

What you will need to know -

    What drives are compatible -
    Usb Compatibility list

How to set your drive up -
It is highly recommended to use Fat32 guide

Once your HDD is setup and ready to go, you will need a program to manage your games!

    Wii Game Manager Guide

Now your set up and ready to go, but you run in to a problem with one of your game backups -

Now if you're a modchip user you need to get over to the

Thanks POB3008, I now only need an SD card and the guts to softmod, I usually am not fearful in doing this kind of stuff but due to my son frying the Wii's ac adapter previously, almost causing damage to the LCD TV etc, not to mention the possible injuries that my son could have incurred. As of yet, I have read Mauifrog's guide for two times.

Thanks and cheers to the Wiihacks community.
