Thread: Problem: Wii won't correctly read my flash drive.

Problem: Wii won't correctly read my flash drive.

    Hi there.

I just bought a new flash drive over at Gamestop. I didn't need a whole hard drive, I was just going to copy my parents' copy of Mario Kart Wii. I made sure to consult the compatibility list before my purchase, of course. I ended up buying a Dane-Elec 16GB flash drive. I figured that it would most likely work, regardless of the fact that it wasn't actually listed on the compatibility list, because the 1GB, 4GB and 8GB models from this brand were all listed as "working."

So, I popped my USB flash drive into my computer and partitioned/formatted it (I believe I did this part properly...) to the proper settings for use on the Wii. Then I put the drive into my Wii--making sure to use the edge slot--and booted up the newest version of Wiiflow. I made sure to designate the USB slot as the destination for my game's installation, and started the install process. The application then became inactive for about 3-5 minutes (at first, I thought it froze, but then I just figured that it needed time to initialize). Right after that, it suddenly said "Installing [RMCE01] MarioKartWii..." shortly followed by "Not enough space: 2803892224 blocks needed, 59 available." When I saw the first number, I...thought it looked waaay too big to be right. But the second number, 59, didn't seem right either--I thought it looked too small. So I put it back in my computer, and...well, it was still an empty flash drive. Every time after that when I tried it, the second number would be different. I've seen 69679 and 243495, but more often than not, the number would be around an obviously impossible -2100000000.

I can't figure out what exactly I'm doing wrong. Did I maybe miss a step somewhere? Could there be something wrong with my USB ports, or maybe even my Wii or flash drive?

To be honest with you, I softmodded my Wii about a month and a half ago. I don't remember which guide I used to softmod it, but I do know that I left off with the softmod right at the point where I could actually...do what I'm trying to do now. I intended to get a hard drive back then, but some stuff came up and I couldn't...so I don't remember all of the details. Could anyone please give me some tips? I would really appreciate any help. My entire family plays Mario Kart Wii, and I would like to join them someday.

How is the drive formatted? I'd suggest FAT32. A link to our FAT32 guide is in my signature.

Unfortunately, I've already seen the guide and it's already formatted as a FAT32...thank you, though.

It sounds like you have a Flash drive problem or it's just not compatible.

Remember , just because the 1, 4 and 8 gb Dane-Elec work on the wii, doesn't mean the others will.

Buy one that has been tested and known to work.

If your just dumping a few games why not try WiiBackupManger and format your drive to "wbfs" or better yet post a system check to see what your mod looks like.

I agree with the syscheck (directions on how to do that is in my signature). I don't agree on formatting as WBFS. Keep it FAT32. Wii Backup Manager can still be used on FAT USB devices.

Thanks for the convenience! Alright, here's what I've got. I hope that it's a problem that can be spotted right here...thanks a lot in advance.

For some stupid reason, it seems that half of the time when I make a post on here, it gets rid of all of the line breaks. I don't understand why, but if it happens in the spoiler, I'm sorry. :/

Alright! If you say so, then I shall. Thanks for the help and the link. I'll let you know what the results are.

One question, though: should I re-backup my NAND? If I don't have to, I don't want to...but just because it takes some time to do so.

If you still have the first one, I'd say it's optional. Though, it also wouldn't be a bad idea to get a fresh NAND backup after you've refreshed everything and you have things working, just in case you have to recover with it one day, it's already modded.

If you don't have your old one, then yes. definaly make a new one.
