Is there a way to playback MP4, M4V files?

I often use the WiiMC channel to watch videos from my hard drive but I have only ever been able to playback AVI files. When I try to play an MP4 file, the Wii will just crash.

Is there a way to fix this or is there some other homebrew application that can playback other video formats?

Yes I am up to date. Before it crashes and restarts the screen goes black and quite a bit of white text appears.

Does that help a bit? I could try to see what some of it says if you think it's significant.

I would download the latest version anyhow. Is your mod up to date too? A syscheck could help, you need to have ios 58.

Alright so I tried updating the WiiMC app through the Homebrew Browser rather than manually and now it's updated.

Now most MP4 files playback, but some that are high quality such as 720p either run slow or don't start at all. Is there a way to improve this?

I would imagine the slowness is just a limitation of the Wii's hardware. You can make sure that you're using a USB 2.0 drive, but that's about all I can think of to speed it up. Someone else might have a better suggestion, though.

Pre-render the 720p video to 480p on another computer before trying to play it on the Wii? Wiis really make for a lousy media player. I, personally, wouldn't condone trying it as you can find something at Wal-Mart for $20 or so that may do what you want, better, than a $150 Wii.

Out of curiosity, would the Wii U have the capability to do a better job running this stuff?
