All wii loaders freezing when mounting drive

    Hi all,

I have had a modded wii for a couple of years now, it always worked without a hassle.

So this weekend, I decided to go all out and buy a Western Digital My Book Essential WDBAAF0015HBK-NESN 1.5 TB, a drive confirmed as working by multiple sources. I have formatted the drive according to the fat32 drive carefully and have updated my softmod (also very carefully) following the softmod guide.

The drive has worked the first time I hooked it up to the console and it was still a fresh format. I ripped a game to it, then the problems started: it would not boot . I start any usb loader application and they all freeze at the usb part (usbloader freezes at Initialize usb device, for instance.) You'll see for example that the drive will be accessed (the light on it will flash and it will make noise) but that's as far as they get.

After that, I tried reformatting the drive (which is detected fine by the computer, by the way.)

A google search also came up with nothing.

I'm running out of ideas at this point, if you can help me in any way, it would be greatly appreciated. I will also provide any detail necessary to getting this situation resolved.

**Edit: I have also tried other USB devices which work perfectly

How much space was assigned for your Wii games in FAT32 ?
Make a small partition (eg. 160GB) for trial.

I had made a partition of the entire disk. I just tried formatting and creating a smaller partition for 160 gb but that did not help, nor did formatting in NTFS. I notice that when I connect the drive to a PC, there is a delay before the PC picks up the drive and I am wondering if that delay is indication of defect with the drive...

one possible cause may be the WD takes more energy (ie. DC current) from PC/Wii to startup.
make sure you power on and spin up the WD drive for 30 seconds before you power on the Wii. that may help.

The WD drive has an external power source though so I don't think that's it.

    Thanks though!
