DVD Drive Issue - Weird Sounds When Reading Discs
So about a year ago I left a previously owned game that had sticker residue on it, in my Wii and didn't touch it until a week ago. The Wii could read it perfectly fine but it wouldn't eject. The issue with ejection was that the residue caused the disc to stick to the white spinning disc that held the game in place. Anyways I ordered a tri-wing screwdriver and dismantled my Wii and then removed the top of the drive and the arm holding the white disc and manually detached my game from it. I replaced it and hit eject on my Wii when I connected it to power so the drive wouldn't think it had something in it and began actually accepting discs.
Ejection works fine now but now when the Wii tries to read a game, it makes a pronounced screeching sound similar to a motors and is unable to read the disc. If I sit in the disc channel while it attempts to read the game, it will throw up a black screen saying an error occurred, hit eject and power off the Wii and consult the troubleshooting guide. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this issue? I personally think I just messed up putting it back together but then again I know literally nothing about the drive and something else could be fundamentally wrong with it (because I am %98 sure that I put everything back exactly).
Most likely what happen was that you didn't put the top part in the exact same spot that it was before and now the disc is not truly aligned when the laser is trying to read it, the screeching sound is probably coming from the disc rubbing on the white part that holds the disc in place, I would suggest to take it apart again and move it a little bit at the time until the sound goes away, it could take several attempts before it does, you don't have to reassembled the wii completly to test the dvd drive, you don't even need to have the face plate attached. when the noise goes away it will probably start reading the games again, unless in the process the laser got damage, if so... well, you have a new set of problems.
That seemed to fix the problem. Looks like I didn't notice the alignment hole when I put it together last time.
Glad you got it figure out...
