[GUIDE] Blackscreens & Freezes - Causes & Solutions [GUIDE]

[GUIDE] BLACKSCREENS & FREEZES CAUSES & SOLUTIONS

You most likely ended up at this thread because you see a blackscreen on your Wii, or a game keeps freezing on you. I will point out the most common causes for blackscreens and freezing issues. Most will be easy fixes and some may be a bit more complex. Your problem could be one of these or multiple. The most common is out of date cIOS and out of date loader combined.

First, if you haven't followed the Softmod Any Wii guide to softmod your Wii, that is probably where you should start. A lot of times things won't work like they should if you have followed a Fail guide from somewhere else.

    SOFTMODS & HARDMODS

Loading a backup game from USB or disc:
If you don't have the latest cIOS with the recommended bases, follow the d2x cIOS Installation Guide

Rerip the game from the original disc. Simple as that. Don't ask where to get a good ISO file!!!

Download this app-pack-v4 and extract to your sd card or fat32 formatted drive for the latest loaders.

Make sure your drive is on the USB Compatibility List.
    Setup your drive with:
Fat32 loading guide (recommended USB setup)
    NTFS Guide

Vertabim DVD-r discs are recommended. Burn with Imgburn at 2x-4x. Some other brands may or may not work, but I know Vertabim will work.
Loading from original disc:
Download and extract IOS Update pack to your sd card and install with MMM. Hardmods follow this guide to update your IOS.

If your disc has too many scratches it will freeze or not play at all. Most local video rental stores can fix your disc for about $2.
Loading Official Channels or Forwarder Channels:
Blackscreen on channels mean that you are missing an IOS that the channel needs to load. Install the IOS Update pack.
If you are having trouble with the Shop Channel, update it with this guide.

Same as Official Channels. Make sure you have all IOS needed and updated cIOS.
If your forwarder takes you back to the Wii menu and not to your app, then you do not have the boot.dol in the correct path.
    example:
    sd:apps/wiiflow/boot.dol
    or
    usb:apps/wiiflow/boot.dol
Loading Homebrew or Hackmii:
If you have problems with Hackmii installer freezing, blackscreen, or no vulnerable IOS error, follow this guide.

Your HBC may not be running on IOS58. Reinstall HBC with the hackmii installer. Also make sure you have the latest version of the app.
Loading Gamecube Backups:
Follow this guide to play Gamecube backups from disc.
Follow this guide to play Gamecube backupsfrom sd card.
Follow this guide to play Gamecube backups from USB.
Loading Original Gamecube Discs:
This can be caused by a missing, corrupt, or outdated MIOS - cMIOS.
To fix either install stock RVL-mios-v10.wad
    Or RVL-cMIOS-v65535(v10)_WiiGator_WiiPower_v0.2.wad
If you have a BLACKSCREEN when you power on your Wii, then follow the OH SH*T: Black Screen of Wii!!! Guide.

If you are not receiving a blackscreen or freeze, but an error instead. Look for your error in the Error Index.

Hi, i followed the mauifrog's guide and the channels that i installed using that guide (wiiflow, neogamma and others) don't work; when i open them, after a moment, appears the system menu, i can only open them from the HBC, why? what i have to do to use the channels from SM? I checked the boot.dol in sd and all is fine.

The channels are just forwarders. Kinda like a shortcut. The forwarder channel looks for the boot.dol on either your fat32 formatted SD card or USB drive.
The file path must be correct for them to work.
The path should be for example:
    SD root: apps/wiiflow/boot.dol

If you extracted the app pack v4, from the softmod any Wii guide, straight to the SD card you should have the correct file paths.

Idk. Whenever it kicks you back to the system menu, it means it could not find the boot.dol.

Try reinstalling them. And try formatting your SD card and extract the app pack to it again.
