    What We Know: Wii U

    What we know:

The Nintendo Wii U is the successor to the Nintendo Wii. It was shown at the E3 Expo on the 7th of June 2011. It received mixed reactions from the audience and some were left confused at the unveiling at E3 on whether it was a brand new console, or a controller add-on to the Wii, due to low focus on the entire new console. (The major focus was the controller). Nintendo are planning to gain the third-party supports back that they lost during the Wii era, as many developers didn’t cater for a motion control, standard definition controller.

Release Date: Spring/Summer 2012 November – December 2012 in Japan, United States, Europe and Australia.

Controller: Built-in accelerometer, gyroscope, speakers, front-facing camera, microphone and a 6.2 inch 16:9 touchscreen. Two Circle Pads and one Stylus. Select, Start, Home and Power buttons, A/B/X/Y face buttons, L/R bumper buttons and ZL/ZR trigger buttons and a Controller sync button. Sensor Strip. The controller is rechargeable. Four controllers can connected and be used at once. Rumble feature built in. Built in web browser. Near Field Connectivity (NFC)

    CPU: IBM Power-based multi-core microprocessor.

Video Output: Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI, component, S-video and composite.

Storage: Internal flash memory, expandable via SD Cards.

Audio Output: Uses AV Multi Out connector. Six-channel PCM linear output through HDMI.

Ports: SD Card slot (supports SDHC cards.) Four USB 2.0 ports. Sensor Bar power port.

    Other Facts:

Nintendo are looking into how they could use Voice Chat and Social Networking. All Wii controllers and games will be supported, as well as peripherals. The Wii U will only play Wii and Wii U discs. It is said to be 50% more powerful then the PS3 and Xbox 360 (although this was on a prototype dev kit). Games could be shown in 3D on a 3D TV, although it’s not something that will be focused on. WiiWare store may include Gamecube games as the Wii U won’t play them. It won’t use Blu-Ray, but a disc of it’s own capable of 25GB storage.
Confirmed Games: Aliens: Colonial Marines, Assassin’s Creed, Batman: Arkham City, Darksiders 2, DiRT, Dragon Quest X, Fifa (13), Ghost Recon Online Arcade, Killer Freaks From Outer Space, Lego City Stories, Madden NFL, Mario Wii U (3D Platformer), Marvel Pinball, Metro: Last Light, New Super Mario Bros Mii, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, No More Heroes 3, Pikmin 3, Project C.A.R.S, Super Smash Bros 4 (Tentative Title), Tekken WiiU, F1 Racing, Professor Layton, Raving Rabbids, Sonic and The Legend Of Zelda WiiU.
Potential Games: Asura’s Wrath, Awesomenauts, Battlefield 3, Call Of Duty 8, Dead Space 3, Kirby, Mario Kart Wii U, Mass Effect 3, Metroid, Professor Layton, Sonic Dimensions, Sonic Generations, Timesplitters 4, Toki Tori, Wii U Fit, WiiU Sports.

Extra: THQ are working on two unannounced games for the Wii U, Ubisoft Paris are also working on a Wii U title, Vicarious Visions working on ‘Project Nova’ for the Wii U. Click for more details.

What I Know (From various articles and news stories over the internet/interviews since its reveal):

Nintendo are focusing very hard on the online features and capabilities of the Wii U. They are working with many other developers such as EA to give the best possible experience. It has been described as a ‘flexible’ online system so far. Valve have shared their thoughts on the Wii U and they ‘love it’. ‘Valve likes the WiiU — the idea of having full Steam support on WiiU excites me quite a bit! Valve rocks!’ The E3 Zelda demo we saw ‘could not be replicated on other consoles’ . It was made in a short period of time and Iwata feels that HD development won’t be a problem. id Tech 5 Games says the Wii U is ‘Slam Dunk’ for their games, and Griptonite Games are ‘itching’ to develop for the console. Wii U is a ‘natural match’ for Angry Birds. The Assassins Creed game being developed for the system isn’t ‘Revelations’. System has plenty of horsepower. The Wii U will force next-gen consoles to come out.Gamecube games may be offered as downloadable titles. Wii U needs a strong line up. EA says the Wii U can do anything PS3 or Xbox 360 can. BBC is interested in the Wii U. Super Mario 3D Land creator says he must narrow down ideas for the next Mario game, has too many. Most likely won’t see any more concrete information on the system until next year. Wii U isn’t a next generation console according to Patcher. Battlefield 3 developer not yet interested in the Wii U. Capcom says they might release a Wii U version of Asura’s Wrath if there is enough demand. Aonuma intends to return to traditional controls for the Wii U. Crytek are happy with the specs of the Wii U.Battlefield 3 looking for killer Wii U idea. Namco Bandai has a developers kit. Dead Space 3 may be headed to the Wii U. EA: We love Wii U. Team Ninja ‘interested in pushing’ Wii U ‘as hard as it can’. Arkham City will play to the consoles ‘strengths’. Mass Effect 3 may be headed to the Wii U. Lego City Stories is ‘Awesome’. Nintendo Network will be used on the Wii U, an account based system has been confirmed. Nintendo are working on multiple tablet support. Nintendo don’t want to make the same mistake with Wii U pricing 3DS. Nintendo might be planning a full blown app store. THQ are working on two Wii U games. Final dev kits are apparently available to developers.

Can't wait to get my hands on this machine...for several reasons:
    1. Finally, nintendo decided to build a machine that can compete with the other current generation consoles in terms of "high profile" popular games. Not to say that the wii lacked "high profile" games.
    2. the homebrew scene and particularly the emulation part. I always dream of a universal game machine, that can play the entire gaming history. certainly the wii was at a near point for achieving this concept with awesome projects and emulators. However, with more horsepower under the hood, we can expect a playstation, nintendo 64 and even playstation 2 and dreamcast emulators on the wii U. I know it's very early to assume that, but giving the fact that very clever and talented people are leading the wii hacking community, I am sure that this is a strong possiblity...
    3. The tablet controller, whether I like it or not, I have yet to decide...but I can see many potential uses for it. both officially from nintendo and also from the hacking community...I can only imagine what apps can be developed by the wii hacking community for this nice controller
    4. the pricing mistake of the 3DS comes in favor for the wii U prices I think...which I think will be very affordable...

anyway, we can only wait and see for the time being until we know more...
