Can you tell us exactly what you installed? A black screen when you first power on is not a good thing, its bricked.

Just to add a bit more... If you were able to play backups from the disc channel then you have cioscorp installed.

Go to the manufacturer's website (seagate, western digital, whatever...) and check if they have a utility to disable sleep.

The black wii's are not able to read backup discs, no matter if you install a modchip. Your only option is a softmod or Wode/Sundriver.

Have you tried a different loader like CFG USB Loader?

Any chance you are using svideo? If one of the pins are broken it can show a B/W screen.
