Once you get one of the needed games, its simple as pie. Just follow word for word, and your good to go. Can get pre-owned copies of Indy at GameStop for under $20, and take it back for a full refund when finished (as long as its within 7 days). LOL

Hi, I'm a complete n00b at this and could really use some help.

I've followed the guide but am having problems. As far as I can see everything has installed correctly ie homebrew channel & apps, configurable USB loader, backup disc channel etc.. As I was going through the softmod guide everything installed perfectly. When I start the usb loader I can browse the wii games that are on my HDD. However whenever I try to load a game through the usb loader the wii just hangs at the 'Booting wii game, please wait...' prompt.

I've tried this with 8 games so far and this happens with every game. Any help you guys an provide would be appreciated..!

I used the default cios249 and also tried 250 to no avail...would you reccomend trying them all?

Re. the HDD - one thing I've noticed is that when I start the usb loader I get a warning ' Partition: FAT1 not found' So I have to manually select my WBFS partition to view the games...I'll go through the fat32 guide and see if it helps...thanks for your quick responses guys

In Chapter 2, Part 1, the wad install, do 4.3u owners need to follow the following section:

Select the folder "System Menu 4.1" -press A
Press (1) to "Install all Wads" - Press A
3 wads should install without error
    "Press any button to continue"

Be sure all 3 wads install, very important
This installs a version patched SM, which I recommend. If this bothers you, don't do it.
WARNING: This is a version patched System Menu, running on a version patched cios60. NEVER replace cios60-v54321 with ios60-6174. Doing so will brick your wii if you update from Nintendo. Never update from Nintendo, don't MUCK up cios60-v54321. You have been warned.
Press B to go back a folder

Is there any advantage to downgrading SM to 4.1?

You didn't read the guide very well did you? The answers to both of your questions are in there. Per Mauifrog:

System Menu 4.1 v544## is installed, preventing N updates, restoring region free and bannerbomb
