The reason i ask is that at the top of the guide in big red letters is 'do not update to 4.3', which has obviously been done by the previous owner.
It says it is for any wii. Works with 1.0-4.3

ok i am getting so frustrated now. i have followed all steps and i am still at the same point. Neogamma R9 retries for 30 seconds to find the hard drive. USB Loader GX goes to a black screen and then bounces back to system menu. USB loader does pretty much the same. It says connect a USB hard disk, goes to a black screen with a white wii logo sign, and then bounces back to system menu. I dont get what i am doing wrong. This is a tried and tested drive on another wii :-(
any help would be greatly appreciated guys, as i feel i am nearly there

Have you correctly set up a compatible hard drive? If you did, and it is fat32 you need a different cios. rev 17 is does not support fat loading.

either your hdd is not compatible (assuming you set up correctly....primary and active) or you are plugged into the wrong port.

    trouble shooting:
plug on the left (vertical Wii), or on the lower (horizontal Wii) usb port
try a flash drive (e.g. wbfs formatted memory stick 4GB - NSMBrother)

on a vertical wii i am using the plug on the left. I have tried an SD card, same one i have used to put custome firmware and files on for HBC etc
I put NSMB and Super Mario All Star Collection both NTSC and PAL and it gives me an error message, to switch off the wii and take out the disc and switch back on when trying to load from SD in Neo Gamma. Can't tell you now frustrating this is, can anyone at all help me.

Guys does this syscheck, help any of you at all to do with my wii problems?
