i have just bought super smash bros, i have a wii running 3.1u with the homebrew channel and bootmii installed

can i update to the latest system menu through the normal system update in the wii settings and then hack the new firmware with super smash bros? or will i risk a brick or something?

Avoid 4.3 at all costs, there is no benefit. If you've previously softmodded, perhaps the guide to do is this one. You can do this one in lieu of that; note on Step 3, skip 3A-3C (doesn't apply to Wiis below 3.3)

1OS236 is installed via cboot2, restoring the trucha bug + version patch and is used to install all the other. ios202-250 are your cios, used by apps to loads games and play movies. Cios16 removes the stub ios16 and restores the ability for your wii to run the Nintendo Backup disk should you ever find a need to do so. cios9, 11, 20, 30, 50, 60 70, 80- these are system ios patched with the trucha bug, es-identify, and dip. These provide functional support for sm1.0-4.3u/e/j for any wii should that SM be installed, and the patches allow a recovery disk to be loaded from the SM or RM with the need of a modchip, if the wii can read burned media, and they prevent 003 error. ios90 does not exist, but it is added in antisipation of the next SM update 4.4/5.0 to provide the previous features to that SM when needed.

You don't need to update, this guide will take you to 4.1 and update your ios files. No need to ever update from Nintendo, 4.1 is as high as you need. 4.2/4.3 are the same as 4.1, only with more protections in place to limit your ability.

That's great ,you thought about everything but aren't you being too extra safe ? I don't think anyone will downgrade lower than 4.1 , if they do they deserve what's coming .
Also, some wii's don't support burned DVD's so some CIOS there are useless . Would it be a good idea to make a "minimal " modpack and a "full" one ?
The minimal would be for a stock 4.3 that does not suport burned media and Gamecube games , it downgrades to 4.1 , should not have CIOS 9 ,11,16,20,30 ,50 and the CMIOS .
If i'm talking rubbish please excuse me . You're the expert here

I don't think I am being extra say, them are many fix your wii guides out there telling people to install this SM 3.2. It is not a common problem, but there are many "Help I installed the wrong system menu" and now the wii is bricked. Those ios are irrelevant to the wii unless they are actually used, they will just sit there and do nothing on a 4.1 wii. But you are correct, I am overly safe, that was the whole point in writing this guide.

You can do the whole guide from chapter 1, reinstall HBC 0.8, do the whole thing. Before you start, go into data management and remove the usbloader channel, the neogamma channel- they have been replaced. Do the guide and post back, hopefully it will work for you.
should i use the any title deleter or update to 4.3 to get rid of all the cios, bootmii and other stuff that was installed?
