No! Do NOT format the wii and don't double post either.

You can run the hackmii installed from your current HBC or using indiana jones. Either will work.

You don't need to reinstall HBC but you need to "prepare SD card" so you get the bootmii folder on your SD card so you can make a nand backup.

    Just follow the guide.
    Damn I suck!!!!

Hi, I need a little help since I'm not able to get the past the first stage of installing homebrew.

Using the smash stack exploit. Will I need the original disk or will a backup copy suffice?

    You'll need an origional disc.
Why would you need to hack the Wii if you could run back ups without the hack..?

This is plainly stated in the guide --- original and US or Japanese version, you're in the UK so a no-go. Only exception I do believe is if you have a hardmod (which isn't gonna work, as 4.3 hardmods won't work on out of region backups).

Im about to buy a new wii and plan to try this out. Am I better off to get a certain model or type to make it easier to soft mod? I read that the newer ones wont play backed up DVDs - is that an issue or easier to use an external drive regardless?

Thinking about the red one that comes with mario. thanks for any advice.

Any Wii produced a little over a year ago or newer won't be able to play backups via optical drive (DVD). You'd have to resort to USB HD, which is faster than disc loading and a heck of a lot more convenient (the D3-2 drive will still rip original discs to USB HD fine). I bought our kids' Wii in November, 2009 and it had D3-2 optical (I Flea Bayed an older drive; but newer production models have a D4 --- much smaller, so no drop in replacement from an older model in that case).

All Wiis are softmoddable, but 4.3 will require one of four original discs in order to successfully softmod it.

I need to hack the Wii in order to get access to Priiloader. I also need it to play english games on my imported wii (japanese) since I don't have the latest versions of gecko OS on my system.

    Alright.
Guess I'll have to dig around for a japanese version of brawl in that case.

    Thanks.

thanks for the quick response! I dont particulary care for dvds so HD is a fine solution for me. SO in this case it shouldnt matter what model I buy? Red wii will work (which is 4.3 I gather) and Ill need to buy one of the following games? Are these easy enough to find?

    Indiana Jones Original Adventures(ntsc-u/pal) -4.3u/e
    or
    Super Smash Bros Brawl(ntsc-u/j) -4.3u/j
    or
    Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's -4.3u/e/j

Edit to add: Can I just rent one of these games or should I have a copy on hand (will it be needed again for updates or anything after the intial setup?)

Yes. Yes. IDK; you're in Canada so easier than some of our overseas folks. And since that's considered U for the purposes of Canada, you have more options on the above than a E (European) Wii.
