Should I move any files around?
If formatting doesn't work, check if you have enough free space on your Wii. If you don't, just delete some channels. You can re-download them after softmodding.

I am going to try formatting with the tool linked in the beginning of the guide, as I originally formatted using my mac. Before starting the softmod, I formatted my wii, so I have as much free space as possible.

Ok, so after reformatting my card, and paying careful attention to what I was doing. I verified using the .exe, and installed all the ISO's by pressing one. This time it installed only 24, all of which installed correctly. I am assuming the other 24 where already installed because when I started my Wii back up, I had loadmii and other channels already. Is it safe to move on? It doesn't seem like there are any problems now. I feel pretty confident everything is installed fine.
Edit: Are you able to downgrade to 4.1 later? I would like to skip it for now and go back and do it later.

joostinOnline is a saint ! heed his words when he speaks. he saved me from the foul trenches of failtube failure, now my wii is up and live and completely softmodded thru this guide. huge thanks to the frog, oddgriffin, and joostinOnline this site roolz and frogs guide is the real deal, i still gotta config my usb harddrive 2moro but this guide has saved my wii. my advice to newbs like me is to completely avoid failtube, and read mauifrogs guide very carefully, including the links at the bottom. also joostinOnline should be promoted from junior member cuz he single handedly got me thru the whole guide and answered all my questions. he put a ton of effort in for me and deserves a promotion lol thanks to all ya'll and good luck newbies

The other 24 are just the resource files from your Mac. If you look, they are the same names as the other 24 with a ._ in front of them.

I followed it to the letter and it worked just fine for me. Thank you very much! (and I thanked your guide) I'm curious, though... if I copy the stuff I put on my SD card (in step 3) over to the external HDD then delete everything from the SD... will everything still work?

I looked at the contents on my computer and it looks like it should just be (drive letter):apps/app folder - pretty much - but I mean does anything NEED to stay on the SD card in order for the USB loader to work?

    Thanks.

Everything will work from usb, but you need to edit the cfg usbloader config file to point the image folders to usb.

The only other thing I noticed, is the guide states SDHC cards will not work. I'm using a brand new Kingston 4GB SDHC card and it worked perfect. I just extracted the ModPack.-AnyWii.zip file to it, ran md5summer.exe and continued with the guide.
Maybe the SDHC card was stopping the HackMii installer v0.8 from working correctly. You don't need to upgrade the HBC, but some of the newer apps require it or a work around if you know what your doing. My first Wii has system menu 3.2 and HBC 1.0.1, and the only thing it doesn't do is the SD card channel from the Wii menu, that was added with system menu 4.0. But I'm going to keep my new red Wii updated, relating to softmods.

    will this work if?

i have a wii that is from 2008 the serial is LU5. it is running ver 4.3 U, it may have been updated by friends son or by nintendo as it was sent there to have a problem with the optical drive repaired. anyway, my question is, can i safely do this even though the update was done and it isnt a vergin 4.3 U? thanks!

I don't understand why you think it wouldn't.
