Sounds like a bad wad. Try downloading and extracting it again.

It basically says to not use System Update to go to 4.3. Use the IOS Update information to set the IOSs as if you had a 4.3 box, but don't actually update to 4.3 menu.

    Good afternoon,
I hope it's ok if I ask a question about the guide.

    In chapter 2 it says:
If you would like to update your Wii IOS:
Download IOS Update.zip (If you are on a System Menu version other than 4.3, you need this!)

    and here it says:
Downgrade to/Upgrade to/Install System Menu v4.1 (Optional, but Recommended!!)

and in the newbie section it says:
General Warnings: Do not update to 4.3!

I'm currently on 4.1E, am I safe to assume that I do need to upgrade to 4.3 as the quide suggests? Im confused by the sentence in chapter 2 where it says that if your not on 4.3 You Need This! and then in the newbie section it says you should not upgrade to 4.3.

    Thank you.

Here's a little lesson for you about official Wii System Updates and how the Wii operates...

To start, all Wii games (your original game discs) only require 3 things to run - the System Menu and it's IOS(to load the game) and another single IOS. For example, Mario Kart runs using IOS36. So technically, the only thing needed to play your original Mario Kart disc would be the System Menu and it's IOS and IOS36. Various games require different IOS. All of the Call Of Duty games use IOS57, etc, etc... So, over time as different games were released, Nintendo needed to make new IOS with new features for these new games. Make sense so far?

Now, the System Menu... The System Menu is simply the "launcher" for all your games. It allows you to launch your original game discs, the Homebrew Channel, gives you access to the Wii's settings, SD card, etc. The System Menu has pretty much been the same since the beginning, with a few additional things added with each new version. The thing is though, it doesn't matter what version # of the System Menu you are running! All a game needs to run is a way to launch it, and an IOS!

So how does this relate to the IOS Update? Instead of offering the IOS as a seperate download/installation file when a game needs it, Nintendo instead bundled all new IOS with a System Menu version update. As stated above, it doesnt matter what system menu version you are running, all you need is the IOS to play your game. Thats where the IOS Update comes in. The IOS Update pack includes all of the IOS that Nintendo released, packaged all in one zip file.

    - The last System Menu version released was 4.3. If you are not or never have been on SM 4.3, then you need to install the IOS Update pack.
    - Also, if you followed some other fail guide for modding your Wii and you are here to fix it, its probably a good idea to install this as well. We have seen lots of mucked up IOS from other guides. Installing this pack will overwrite all that crap with stock IOS.

Simply put: IOS update is everything in the 4.3 menu update except for the menu update. The menu is left alone.
